The Cookie Thief
A man was waiting at an airport one night,
With several long hours before his flight.
He hunted for a book in the airport shop,
Bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop.
He was engrossed in his book, but happened to see,
That the woman beside him, as bold as could be,
Grabbed a cookie or two from the bag between,
Which he tried to ignore, to avoid a scene.
He read, munched cookies, and watched the clock,
As the gutsy "cookie thief" diminished his stock.
He was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by,
Thinking, "If I wasn't so nice, I'd blacken her eye!"
With each cookie he took, she took one too.
When only one was left, he wondered what she'd do.
With a smile on her face and a nervous laugh,
She took the last cookie and broke it in half.
She offered him half, as she ate the other.
He snatched it from her and thought, "Oh brother,
This gal has some nerve, and she's also rude,
Why, she didn't even show any gratitude!"
He had never known when he has been so galled,
And sighed with relief when his flight was called.
He gathered his belongings and headed for the gate,
Refusing to look back at the "thieving ingrate."
He boarded the plane and sank in his seat,
Then sought his book, which was almost complete.
As he reached in his baggage, he gasped with surprise:
There was his bag of cookies in front of his eyes!
"If mine are here," he moaned with despair,
"Then the others were hers and she tried to share!"
Too late to apologize, he realized with grief,
That he was the uncouth one, the ingrate, the thief!
