it is the most important thing to notice before buying a smartphone that is battery life . if u have smartphone with lots of extra features and huge specification but no battery life then it is waste purchasing that mobile phone. so first of all check as per Ur use how much battery is needed for . but always try to take mobile phone with minimum of 3000mah battery that will be good as per today situation.
then test the speaker both the music speaker and the call speaker as it should be louder enough to make u hear when it rings when u are in noisy area and also when u make calls in noisy area the call speaker should be clear enough to u to understand by u . so check the speakers
then go for the camera as it is the most prominent thing in the smartphone which should me the best becoz it will mostly take place of ur camera and should be used very much so take care of it try to take at least 13mp of rear camera and minimum of 5 mp of front camera
try to buy ur smartphone from a verified shop or eCommerce website as it should be lasting for more than 7-8yrs with u so there should not be any fraud or damage present in the smartphone or if any problem persist u can to him and ask for the repair for free if it is there in between warranty period .
check before buying weather all the components with the mobile box are genuine or not if yes then go for it if not then do raise the voice against it and take some action becoz ingenue component used in the genuine mobile phone may cause anything wrong .
before buying also try to compare ur phones with other phone with same specification of different model but with less price it will save ur some buck s which will also be smart purchasing. so take care of it.
