SANGABORA(Bengali): Mystery, Suspense, Thriller
This long weekend is a regional movie goers' delight. While Hindi and English films've turned out to be duds as usual, regional movies released're an excellent fare. I'm having a wonderful time watching the four wonderful regional movies and I wish to share this treasure with you. Maybe, commercially they may not do well but what a sumptuous fare. You'll remember them despite they being made in different language.
If you're a lover of suspense thrillers, this should be right up your alley. The cast may be new to you and subtitles can make you follow the story. The treatment of the movie is good and doesn't let the proceedings down one bit. At the end of the movie, you realize it is worth every rupee you spent upon it. The movie has been made @ the cost of Rs 22 crores. It is hard to speculate whether it'd recover the amount, but then enjoyment is not based on money. This one is interesting.
Two documentary film makers go missing while investigating an ancient stone found in a village which is far away from the “City Of Joy” – Kolkata. Mysterious events start about their life. The protagonist, a college boy named Arka decides to solve the mystery surrounding it. He finds few ancient inscriptions carved upon the stone. To unravel the mystery behind it, he takes the help of his paternal uncle Barsha played by Soumitra Chatterjee who is a linguist expert.
To find the missing filmmakers, they go to the far-flung village of Gorang. They realize that not only they are being hunted by another unknown group of people for the metal piece but the metal piece itself is a treasure map. The suspense revealed at the climax'll leave you stunned.
Soumitra Chatterjee holds the movie together with a lively performance. The screenplay is good and has been directed well. The movie could've benefited from a big star cast. Also, it is not a usual commercial release. It also has competition from another Bengali movie VANDHU but then a good movie is always appreciated. Apart from Soumitra Chatterjee, it has Kaushik Sen, Samadarshi Dutta, Sampurna Lahiri, Bidita Bag, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Khoraj Mukherjee.
Actor Bidita Bag has earlier acted in Hindi film FROM SYDNEY WITH LOVE(2012). She has also played a role in late Bappaditya Bandyopadhyay's unFinish938844ed trilogy shot in Cherapunjee in which she enacted a lead role in the second part. In her latest Bengali fare SANGABORA, she does a commendable job. In this tribal-themed movie, she plays the character of an edBrianbalakumaranr. She films within the film. Actor Sampurna Lahiri worked hard to master Swahili pronunciation. The movie has an unconventional story line. The viewer'll like a scene, where Soumitra is going through the vertebrae gallery exhibits of a museum.
Director Bulan Bhattacharya wanted to make this movie after visiting African continent and Swahili-speaking hamlets. He has kept that dialect in SANGABORA through the dialogue delivery. He recreated the African tribal ambiance as the descendants of one such tribe from East Africa had been living in a part of Gujarat for ages. Despite integrating with Indian society, they've retained their culture. Outdoors were shot in that part of Gujarat.
So, if you'd like to enjoy a different fare, SANGABORA should be it. It could take away the boredom that dull usual releases create.
