The movie as stated by many as a ‘war film’, ‘WWII’, ‘Saving Private Ryan’ kind-of-a-movie, all suits well but there is an arcane feeling which sets apart the world wars(in particular WWII) that cant be classified as any of the above mentioned. Of coarse it takes a granule of all the above mentioned words but ‘Enemy at the Gates’ doesn’t really qualify as a ‘war’ movie(as much as it was a **battle of the minds**) except that it was set during the WWII. The same movie could very well be directed to be a big potseller but the the environ of chaos and mass-killing not only added depth to the characters- **Vassili Zaitsev**(Jude Law) and **Major Konning **(Ed Harris) **, **but also gave it a sparkle which shines all the way till the end of the movie.
Saving Private Ryan was better you say. well! Uh! The WWII can never be compared to any other war because there was no WORLD war ever again! The Vietnam War, no doubt goes down in the annals of history as a tough one but none whatsoever tested the nerves as the WWII. I find it surprising that 6 men -3 from the Allied and the other 3 from the Axis went on to change the coarse of history – with a chimerical mission to conquer the world. and you say Saving Private Ryan was better… Ya whatever! The war does get out different views from different mouths off different minds. You know why? ‘cause we’re all different. ha!
The director wastes no time on obscure and redundant clips but starts out with the main plot on the onset of the movie. Stalingrad is the goal- “The name says it. **S T A L I N grad’**. This city bears the name of **the boss**. its more than a city, it’s a **SYMBOL**. If the Germans capture this country, the **entire country will collapse**”, said the Soviet Commander to tell the viewers what to expect. The remaining scenes could be shown(literally copy-pasted) in any other war-movie and you wouldn’t really think of World WarII that time.
War goes far far beyond the field and it all begins in the mind. The quiter the mind, the stronger the power it can behold.
The movie revolves around the minds of the two adroit snipers already mentioned and the only edge one had over the other was… that’s for you to see. ha! The other characters Danilov(Joseph Fiennes), Sasha and Tanya(Rachel Weiss) set the plot for the confrontation of the two well .So on the whole we have a few turn-coats, a bit of romance, some jealousy, a pinch of patriotism and above all-the satisfaction of **vengeance(coupled with a LOT of mind-games)**. At some level I related these with the union of Kane and Abel more than any of the movies mentioned elsewhere in the movies. Correct me if I’m wrong.
There’s not much to reveal much in the movie because most of what happens is not much of a secret. But some things do help-A rough idea about the world war IIA very good idea about the WWIII am kidding. You can do well even without the above two.
A sincere advice- Do not go with any preconceived notions or expectations. Learn to see what the director’s trying to show, not what you want to see. For me the movie was a real inspiration.
