Like in a game of chess and in any endures in life, end game is very important. Whatever good we play our opening game and middle game, if we fail to play well in the end game, we may lose and there will be no reversal. Mere Baap Pahle Aapis a good example of how a bad endgame pull down the benefits of the opening and middle games.
The film is a story of son (Gaurav – Akshaye Khanna) & a father (Janardhan wishvanbhar Rane – Paresh Rawal). Rane is the best friend of Mathur (Om Puri), who is desperate to get married in his 50s. Being a close friend, Rane always go with him where he cannot skip his friend. To our joy they always land up in some or other troubles. Gaurav is behind Rane to avoid Mathur. Gaurav gets an anonymous call herself addressing as his college mate and her name as Rose. Rose (Sheekha Kapoor – Genelia D’souza) is now after him and she even calls home. Sheekha is staying with Anuradha (Shobhana), a music professor in Arts college. Mere Baap Pahle Aaap is all about a father helping his son to get his love a son trying to make his father’s love story to a success.
Director, Priyadarsan succeeded in tickling some funny bones but failed to finish the fine job he was doing in style. When it come to comedy, the director shown his class and there are certainly a good number of occasions we laugh all out. Ompuri is the leading hero this time. Scenes involving Akshay & Paresh Rawal too are impressive. However, as a complete movie it doesn’t impress as expected.
It is refreshing to see Akshay Khanna on screen. He is still the fresh young guy. Good work. Paresh Rawal is good to watch when he is doing comedy. However, in scenes which require serious acting he was a misfit. Om Puri on the other hand was in full form and created more comedy than Paresh Rawal. It is good to see these two veterans do well together, after Malamaal weekly. Genelia D’souza is excellent. I saw her earlier in a Tamil film where she was superb and she carried the same energy to the film. She didn’t even looks like a new comer, but a confident actress. Her smiles and naughty gestures all did a fine job for the film. She is here to stay. Archana Puran Singh got a small but good role and she did her role well. Manoj Joshi and Rajpal Yadav were wasted in small roles. Nasarudheen Shah’s guest appearance was impressive. I was expecting much from Sobhana from this movie. She looks good but Priyan should have utilized her dancing skills to mesmerize the audience where she was reduced to a supporting actress. Neverthless, it was good to see the national award winner onscreen after a long time. Overall performance is very good.
Music is average. Ishq subhan allah & Mere Baap are the two numbers which sound good for music…Vidyasagar’s music is not that catch worthy but with beautiful choreography it makes an impression. Choreography of the movie deserves a special applaud. Let it be on brilliant sets by Sabu Cyril or beautiful back waters in Kerala, they were superb. Cinematography by Piyush Shah is very good and right for the script and scenes. Editing…hmmmm….the film should have trimmed by 10 to 15 minutes.
The major problem for the film lies with the plot. First of all the plot is not suitable for the taste of bollywood audience. Second, the villain in the movie is not at all strong and when we fight an imaginary villain, we cannot expect any sympathy. The last 15 minutes or so is a huge burden for the film. In another note, it is not a slap stick comedy like many other Priyadarsan film. It is a comedy for which we need to involve in it and give few thought.
Having said this we cannot write off the movie that easily. If compare with many other movies released in the name of comedy, the movie stand different and carry the class. To its merit it contains a serious sub plot as well. It worth a single time watch, if you are one who like light entertainers.
Not up to the trade mark ‘Priyadarsan film’, but better than many other releases The movie is recommended, if you watch a movie once in two weeks.
