A Hit Maker!!!. Review on Five Best Movies of Priyadarshan

From my college days, Priyadarsan movies entertained me a lot.Since I am from Kerala, I have seen most of his films, if not all. It is a good initiative by Mouthshut to have a review on the best 5 films by Priyadarsan. Since he is now completed 55 movies, it is worth selecting top 5.And I thought not to leave the chance to shortlist his movies.

I will select 5 Hindi Movies.

Starting from Muskurath Priyadarsan has reached till Malamaal Weekly in Hindi Cinema. His Chup Chup Ke is about to release.

BEST OUT OF ABOVE 13 1. VIRASAT: No matter what, this Priyadarsan movie is the best of his works so far in Hindi. This is a remake of Kamal Hassan starrer Tamil Movie ’Thevar Maghan’.It is not an easy job to remake a movie and make it equal with the original. But here, Priyadarsan remade it, even better than the original. Kamal Hassan is a not so beatable actor and Anil Kapoor simply did that. Tabu matched Revathy. Pooja Batra got a good opening. The visuals were good, choreography was super and the special effects were wonderful. No wonder, when receiving the filmfare award for best story, Kamal Hassan told ’’. …giving our movie for remaking to others is like giving away our children. But, when it is for Priyadarsan, it is like giving our daughters’ hand in marriage.’’Amerish Puri has also given a good performance.

1. HERA PHERI: This became a trend setter in Bollywood and the repercussions are still not silent. Paresh Rawal was established as one of the finest comedians ever found in Hindi Cinema.This comedy film re-established the norms of comedy. The concept of situational comedy came into prominence Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty & Tabu all contributed well. It is sad that Priyadarsan is not the director of the sequel which is soon to be released Except Priyadarsan and Tabu, all cast remains same, in addition to Johny Lever. Hera Pheri was the remake of Hit movie by Siddiq Lal, Ramji Rao Speaking. I have my doubt whether Paresh Rawal can do the role Innocent have played. But Paresh Rawal proved me wrong. So is Priyadarsan.

2. GARAM MASALA: The beauty of this movie is that, the plot is so thin and any mishandling of the script even for once, will take out the merry out of the movie. Priyadarsan handled the subject very well and the movie became the hit of the season Chemistry between Akshay Kumar and John Abraham worked very well. Priyadarsan always believed that the bad boys can play funny boys as well. Amrish Puri, Om Puri & Paresh Rawal are examples.His merit is, he can make Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Akshay Khanna or John Abraham comedians. He had a meaty role in Malamaal weekly and he also has a good role in Chup Chup Ke. Situational comedy again played its role.This was a remake of Priyan’s own Boeing-Boeing in Malayalam, which is been inspired by Hollywood flick Boeing-Boeing.

3. Malamaal Weekly: This movie is making history. With a small budget, the movie made high inroads to the box office counters. Even after 7 or 8 weeks of its release, it list in top 5 chart, where the new releases come and disappear. The locations were not so catchy for the class viewers, but the movie is best doing at multiplexes. Compare to other movies, this movie have some drawbacks, in its logic etc. But, the simplicity of the plot, selection of the caste and the knitting of the screenplay made it a feast for your eyes. Paresh Rawal and Om Puri competes each other and both came out as winners. Ritesh & Reema sen got appreciation. Each actor in the movie got a character as his/her own and got their own reasons for their actions. Simplicity made the movie special.

4. Hungama: It was difficult to select Hungama over Hulchul. However, after weighing the options, I selected Hungama. The number of plots and subplots connected and knitted a story with great accuracy and details to script. Being this one is the remake of Priyan’s first movie ’Poochakkoru Mookuthy’ when it is been remade to Hindi, he did it in style. The climax scene where all coming to a common place is now very much branded as priyan style climax. Only after priyan did Poochakkoru Mookuthy, other famous Malayalam writers tried this kind of endings. Akshay Khanna and Aftab performed well Rimi Sen got a good debut.BR>

REMAKES? Priyadarsan is often been accused of remaking movies. But I find it is ok. In the case of books, we got translators. Without good translators we could not read War & Peace or Karamasov Brothers. The story of Hungama was there for 25 years in Malayalam. Hindi audience didn’t get a chance to watch it. What do you feel? Priyadarsan should not have remade the movie? For Keralites it might be ok, because they already seen the movie. But it is always good to have circulation of good movies

The one film which I didn’t like as that of Priyadarsan is Kabhi Na Kabhi.

Now, out of his Malayalam films, select 5 films is not easy like Bollywood films as there are many and many super hits.

1. KILUKAM (This is my favorite film. I might have seen this film 20 or 25 times and even today I can see it without any boring).

The movie was remade in Hindi as Muskurath, but the Hero was not able to come anywhere near to Mohanlal.The movie was very funny with laugh a minute comedy. Mohanlal Jagathy comedy worked in a big way.

1. KALAPANI: This is 100% original movie by Priyadarsan, just to prove anybody in doubt of priyan’s caliber to make original movies. He got wide spread appreciation for this film. Amrish Puri, Mohanlal, Prabhu, Tabu…. All acted very well. The film has done good business in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andra Pradesh. But in Hindi the film didn’t worked that way. Irrespective of its box office fate, this movie is a separate treat.

2. CHITHRAM: This movie has created box office history in Kerala, running more than 365 days continuously in one Theatre. (One may think of Sholey featuring in Mumbai theatre for years). Again, Mohanlal, is the Hero. And the merit of this movie is its story. One cannot’ forget Mohanlal’s character in this movie. The end scene where Mohanlal goes to Jail, the eyes of the audience will be wet. Still it is an out and out comedy film.

3. ARYAN: This movie is an action oriented film. I had to struggle to select Aryan against ABHIMANYU. Mohanlal and Ramya Krishnan performed very well. No jokes and no leisure. This is 100% serious film.

4. SELECT IT FOR ME

Here I gave you the chance to select the best Malayalam/Tamil movie of Priyadarsan. Here is my shortlist.MIDHUNAM, ABHIMANYU, VELLANAKALUDE NAADU, THALAVATTAM, ADHWAITHAM, CHEPPU, NINNISHTAM ENNISHTAM, THENMAVIN KOMBATHU… Let me add one Tamil Film also, SNEHITHIYE.

Priyadarsan has tried Comedy, Serious films, Musicals, Action films and he is now working on an art film!

Technically brilliant, master of timing and open to all ideas, hope to have much more hits from Priyadarsan.
