The Phenomenals at their Peak. Review on Alaipayuthey - Tamil

Indian Cinema was all of Bollywood till the last decade.The Southern Movies which were enough poweful and pep couldnt do the magic to attract such a wide audience and carve a national niche.The powerful cast of South which had spinners like NTR,MGR,Kamalhassan,Rajnikanth etc couldnt expand their hype horizons and Bollywood was always at the drivers seat.However the situation has changed this decade with the talented crew from downsouth proving themselves in the national level and winnning accolades.In the process,they also established a good name and importance for the South Indian Industry.The three most important people in that process were Maniratnam,the deft director, a r rahman,the Music Midas and P.C.Sreeram,the captivating cinematographer.And when these three decided to join together for a youthful and practical story,success could be the only outcome and it is.

The proffesionalism and perfectionism of these three phenomenals are highly at display in the song ''Patchai Nirame'', and throughout the film,and you cannot stop after watching once.The song ''Patchai Nirame'', a unique blend of emotions of love and various shades has been rendered beautifully by the threesome and I havent seen anything more exemplifying in Indian Cinema for over 20 years of my life.The song which comes in through for five minutes and 16 seconds has been one of the pleasing cinematic experiences in my life.

The film starts with Madhavan(debut) waiting to pick up his wife Shalini out in the evening.But she could not be found.Madhavan searches for her throughout the night, and with this in the front the beautiful editing by Sreekar Prasad carries the love and life of the young couple in the back.The climax is a cohesive blended of both the stories,which vitalises love after marraige.The screen play and storytelling had inspired DIL CHATHA HAI, which Farhan himself admitted.Everyone was happy that Mani could give such a romantic and practical movie putting aside his political plots.

The cast had no senior performers except for Jayapradha,who plays the strict mother and it is a perfect comeback for her.While Shalini and Madhavan play the lead pair with striking ease,the cameos played by Arvindswami,Khushbu,Venu Arvind,Vivek,Pyramid Natarajan and Swarnamalya throughout the movie are all enjoyable.

It was the crew which dictated terms throughout the movie.Sreekar Prasad had been effecient in his editing,while Vairamuthu has potrayed prominent emotions in his https://lyrics.But it was the main three of Sreeram,Mani and Rahman that lift the film to great standards.Rahman and Sreeram at their best ( as always) has done an encore for Mani,who has done the film in his own proffesional way.The proffesionalism of using one font in promos and throughout the film was innovative .The font has been renamed Alaipayuthey font and that speaks of the reach of the film.

The film has lessons for all.For the critic,there is a clear cut message that you wont get easy pickings in Tamil Cinema anymore.For the budding directors,its a lesson on film making.For the fans,its an announcement that Tamil Cinema is about to get far better than Hollywood.
