What went wrong in Delhi Metro?

Till a few days back, Delhi Metro is considered to be a symbol of efficiency, capability and as a model for the way how mega infrastructure project should be executed. We used to highlight DMRC as an example of zero tolerance project on safety aspects. Within a span of 72 hours , DMRC has become villain in construction industry. People have started taunting the performance of DMRC. What went wrong exactly? It is very true that an efficient organisation like DMRC can not become this much inefficient and callous overnight. There is no change in nature of job or in situation which may cause such reckless behaviour of DMRC engineers who are otherwise very competent. Then what has changed? Only change has taken place is that work environment has changed drastically. Engineers are working under tremendous pressure from Delhi Govt. to complete the project before schedule. Engineers are not allowed to perform according to their skill and knowledge. They have been forced to accept short cuts which may prove to be dangerous and that exactly what happened. Myself an engineer working in infrastructure sector , I can understand how much stress is exerted on engineers when forced to work under pressure and that too when the pressure is for some unethical, unscientific action. All are not that mentally tough to withstand the pressure and they succumb to the pressure.

Nothing is wrong with DMRC for sure, only Govt . should stop exerting pressure on them and allow them to work freely . It may not be completed before Common Welth Games but a lot will be saved in terms of life and property.
