Umakant Mishra worked as a postman in Harjinder Nagar, Kanpur. A cash amount of Rs. 697.60 to be distributed as money order was handed to Umakant by the post office's department authorities. He claimed to have distributed Rs. 300 and returning the rest to the senior colleagues. However, they filed an FIR complaint accusing him of stealing Rs. 57.60 on July 13, 1984. Resulting, Umakant was suspended and booked for criminal breach of trust by the police.
29 years and 350 hearings later - Justice prevailed, Umakant proved innocent, judgement delivered on November 25, 2013. Although he had his honour restored, Umakant paid a heavy price for a crime he didn't commit. Being the sole source of income for his family, he couldn't educate his children, sought donations to get his daughters married. The accusation came like a wild storm that not only ruined Umakant's career but also his children's.
