Teacher Education : INCREASE IN PROGRAMME DURATION

A professional course has be comprehensive and should give the student enough confidence to be on his/her own. The present duration of the teacher education programmes are wholly inadequate in training the future teachers in both content and methodology. In this context, the efforts of the Regional Institutes of Education in conducting a four year integrated course leading to B.Sc. Ed./B.A. Ed. are laudable. The experience has shown that these students have fared better in their careers. Ideally, the primary and elementary teacher training course should be two years after graduation and the secondary/higher secondary teacher training should of four years after the +2 stage or of two years after graduation. Teacher training must be provided for the B.Com. graduates also as the restructured curriculum has brought in subjects such as business studies, commerce, accountancy and business organization.
