I love teaching but learning often gives me nightmares. I remember how I used to fear Computer viva at school. I never thought learning computers can be fun until I got a computer at home. I discovered the entertaining aspects like games, music, internet and felt yeah this is amusing!
It’s often said that a person learns more while teaching… Let me share my experience. I am teaching my mom how to operate a computer…
Introductory Class:
‘There is a lady at the bank almost near her retirement but she is operating the computer well, how did she learn it?’
Mamma, when computers were introduced in India all the employees were trained even my teachers got the training.
‘Your aunt says that she chats with her daughter, when will I be able to do that?’
I am here right.. U can chat with me without using the computer.. :P
‘I want to chat with her daughter?’
Duh! Alright! I will teach that once you understand the basics.
Introduction to the Keyboard:
‘Why are all the alphabets on the Keyboard jumbled?’
Mamma once you learn typing you won’t find it difficult to type. It’s this jumbled sequence that will make your typing easy.
‘I can see that there are numbers mentioned at two different sides on the keyboard, why so?’
If any numerical key doesn’t work you can check the one on the other side. :))
‘Why is it so that I cannot find extra alphabets on the other side?’
Because the alphabetical keys are of good quality :P

I explained the functioning of Caps Lock, Space bar and Shift. She calls space bar as ‘lambi line..!’ I opened MS word and asked her to type her name using capital letters wherever required. To my horror there was red line below her name… before she could ask I explained how Word accepts only English and word in any other language will be shown as an error with a red line below it.
She happily keyed her name and I told her tomorrow I will create a mail account for her and I will teach her how to check mails.
‘Don’t you think I need revision? As once I learn anything additional I will be forgetting what I have already learnt’
Mamma learning computers isn’t like the bookish knowledge, what ever you are learning today you will be able to use it in someway or the other in the next lesson I teach you.
Let me teach you how to switch off the computer… Next time when I’ll ask you to shut the system you should be able to do it on your own.
‘You mean the class is over?’
