Most often then none we think that we know certain languages and that when we travel to some distant places, we thing that the langauage that we speak is not known in the place where we have travelled to. We take the local people for granted and speak and sometime abuse people in an anticipation that he/she is not going to understand anything. Many times it has happned to me as well. When I uesd to travel by Rickshaws, when I used to speak Hindi, the driver used to take me for granted as if I am an UP/ MP fellow and that I cant understand Marathi and most of the times used to charge me more. And when, I broke few Marathi words, immediately the things change.
One such incident that my Dad shared with me is based on the similar lines. It is meant for fun only and nothing else. Not to offend any language or community.
Some 20 years ago, my father was on his official trip to Kerala and was in an Ambassador. Since the roads were not that developed and was to travel to a very remote place, eventually missed the route. He and his 4 other friends were totally puzzeled with the situation and thought of asking for help from the ongoing localalites. So, one of the friend on the cleaner side who was a Maharashtrian thought of giving it a shot to ask the next approaching guy on the road. He totally belived him to be a Keralite and just for fun he asked : Arre ae Raan##chya (Most used abusive Maharashtrian word) ABC Kitee Laamb aahe? (How long is this place from here?) Dad said that the man didnt said anything for few seconds and then he said : mailto:Phod@@@@@CHYA (Even more abusive Maharashtrian word) Pudhun 5KM chokaat right, nantar straight ja........
(After 5KMs take a right turn from the corner and then straight) GWAD, he was a Maharashtrian in Kerala! My uncle couldnt belive his ears as to what he heard! He was stunned for few moments and indicated the driver to squeeze from the place........hahahahaha
Now that is called as Sher pe savva sher!
Moral of the incident : Never assume that the person next to you doesnt know the language that you speak and never utter non-sense in an anticipation that no one is going to understand it.
