A rabbitwas one day making funof the animalsof the forest for being so slow upon their feet and boastingof his speed. "I have never yet been beaten," said he, "when I put forth my full speed. I challenge anyone here to race with me."
"Wait a bit," The tortoise said quietly, "I accept your challenge. I'll run a race with you, and I'll wagerthat I win."
"That is a good joke," said the rabbit. "I could dance around you all the way." When the tortoise insisted the rabbit, who was much amusedat the idea replied ,"Oh, well, let's try and see."
"Keep your boastinguntil you've beaten," answered the tortoise. "Shall we race?"
And it was soon agreed that the foxshould set a course for them and be the judge.
When the time came both started off together. The rabbit dartedalmost out of sight at once. The tortoise ploddedon and plodded on slowly towards the finish. But the rabbit was soon so far ahead that he thought he might as well have a rest, out of too great security and confidence of victory. And of course to show his contemptfor the tortoise, he lay and fell fast asleep.
In the meanwhile the tortoise came jogging along at a slow but continued pace, in no time reached the goal. At last the rabbit woke up with a start from his nap and dashed on at his fastest, but only to see the tortoise nearing the finish line, and he could not catch up in time to save the race and the tortoise won the race.
Slow and steady wins the race. Well, for those who have not been properly schooled, This is the moral of one of Aesop's fables, "The Tortoise and the Hare."
