10 yrs ago, the only persons who spent a bulkof their free time on the computerwere staff of the IT industry. 2day, surfinghas become a pastimeas social activity(pub hopping/going 2 films/relative/Friend's home). As the web has become an integralpart of life, a huge number of people using the web do so in a compulsive& out-of-control manner.

In one acutecase, an unemployedmother Sandra Hackerallegedly spent over 12 hoursa day secludedfrom her 3 kids & neglectedthem while she surfed the Web. NetAddictionis similar 2 common addictions(smoking/drinking/drugs/gambling).

Just as in case of an addiction, a person becomes an impulseneedy of a particular stimulation2 the point where obtaining a steady supplyof that stimulus becomes the sole & centralfocus of their lives. The addict graduallyneglects his workduties, relationships & ultimately even his healthin his drive 2 remain stimulated.

In some cases of addiction(alcohol or heroin), wherein more & more stimulationis vital 2 produce the same pleasurableeffect. A related event is withdrawalcan also occur, wherein the addicted person becomes reliantupon their source of stimulation& experiences unpleasantlethal reactionswhen he goes without it. Sources of addictive stimulationcan be chemical(alcohol/cocaine/nicotine/ heroin), sensual(sex) or even informational(gambling/workaholism/stock).

While many people like 2 engagein sexualrelations, or gamble, or have the rare drink because of the bliss, clearly not all are addicts. Rather, the term addiction only applies when someone's stimulation seeking gets 2 the pointwhere it starts interferingwith their ability 2 functionnormallyat work/home. The debate surrounding Net Addictionis if people have become addicted 2 the netitself, or 2 the stimulates U can have on net (gambling, pornography or chat & bulletin boards).

Net users often show an initialcraze with the Web, but in time loseinterest & cut the time spent 2 a std. usage. I used have When Cable Initiallystarted, eventually it wore off. But users who do go on 2 show compulsiveNet use, 4 the most part become obsessiveonly with regard 2 particular types of information2 be had gambling, pornography, chatroom or shoppingsites.

In essencethe main addictive reason of the Net is its ability 2 enable instant& fairly secretsocial incentiveas Net has made it vastlyeasier & more handy4 someone 2 develop such a urge.

Because the Net is used by most people, knowing how 2 separateexcessivefrom normal use becomes difficult& cannot be foundusing simple trials. Normal users, no matter how heavy their usage do not neglect their duties or family/friends. Addicts often think about the Net while they are offline.
