One of my all time favorite songs is Pehla Nasha, from the 1992 movie Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, which incidentally happens to be one of my all time favorite movies. Quite a lot of reasons why I love this song so much. I was 23 when the movie was released and the first love thing, was something I could identify with easily.
Also when choreography in Bollywood meant heaving bossoms, crass costumes, loud ear shattering music and jhatak matak, this was a song, so refreshingly natural, so brilliantly choreography. Farah Khan really revolutionized Bollywood choreography with this song. No elaborate steps, just simple natural gestures. Doing an impromptu dance with your brother, slipping in a note to your beloved when she is not looking, the feeling when you were first time in love, and you just felt like dancing. And yeah Pooja Bedi's Marilyn Monroe act( I guess practically the only time I could tolerate Ms.Bedi on screen).
And yeah I went totally head over hells for Ayesha Jhulka, her sweet, natural beauty, and simplicity. Sadly in the rest of the movies, after this she was plain awful. And Aamir again just proving he is one of the best actors in Bollywood. This is a song, which I guess will never go outdated at any time, as long as people keep falling in love. Another thing which I liked about this song, was that it was mercifully free of Swiss Alps and gaudy settings. It was shot in a total natural tone, the tea fields, the rolling hills, the valleys, the dhaba, the small bakeries, the garages, director Mansoor Khan beautifuly brings out the atmosphere.
Jatin Lalit's music also added wonderfully to the tempo. Especially the beautiful piano interlude at the starting of the song, and the music is just right, not too high, nor too low. Totally melodious, this was a real welcome break from the Dhak Dhaks and Tunna Tunnas which were blasting our eardrums then. And Majrooh Sultanpuri's lyrics were simple and so romantic coupled with wonderful singing from Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam. All in all a song, which would remain forever memorable.
