I started reading short stories when I was in first year of my college .That were long back summer of 1999. When in summer vacations we had very little to do except reading short stories or roaming idle without doing any thing specific. I would occasionally visit British council library in Delhi and borrowed books. British council I suppose is the best place in Delhi for reading fiction. But the problem in British council is they generally keep books either written by British Authors or Published in England. I was never been fond of British Authors. I sometime tried to read Dickens but his books were too big too read. Here I found a quarterly journal “Granta” .It was just the collections of new author’s work. However most of the stories were very nostalgic. They could be on any subjects on childhood, war, and friends or on anything. Here After reading these stories I got an Idea that I should write too. But writing itself required some skills that I know I lack that time and even now. Though I tried. I wrote a short love story based on partition. It was about a love affair between a Muslim boy and a Hindu Girl and in background there were so many things like riots, killing, and Mahatma Gandhi’s visit in Delhi. Meanwhile story got published in our college magazine and got nice reviews. That was truthfully my first and last short story published and written. After passing college I have never written any story however I read so many.
