Importance of Indices

Have 4 Big Macs in a day and make sure that's your only diet. If your in a city (so called Urban) then you just above poverty. If you live in a rural area you below poverty line.

Sounds bizarre?? It’s a fact. Logic -

Big Mac - 540 calories

India measures poverty using consumption patterns i.e. your calorie intake. Your considered poor if you consume below 2100 calories in Urban areas and 2400 calories if your in a rural area.

Was reading a nice post here on WHO and the mention about global poverty and it's measurement/impact. And it quickly reminded me about how important measurement of poverty and other various indices are especially our poverty Index.

So consuming 4 big macs could assure you of being poor under any standard. Given the fact that Big Macs are oft interchangeably used to reflect “fat food”, given the fact that McDonalds has been criticized of promoting obesity.

Me not saying that India not poor. Me saying that we need better Indices, better measurement

Another such bizarre index is our IIP data. It’s measures growth in Typewriters. How bizarre in the world of Laptops and Smartphones. Obviously there is dire need to get certain measurements proper.
