It's a different day today at office. This is a complimentary day, we have to work, in lieu of a leave taken due to a political strike. Attendance is very low. About 10 odd people have arrived in my team. The whole bay seemed empty when I walked in. Only one person had come before me. She was staring at the doorway, in anticipation that some one would come. She was feeling lonely and scared. The lights are dim, put off at many places. The corridors are silent, you cannot hear the normal hustle bustle there.
Slowly, few other people have started coming in. One of them found that a website that is normally blocked, is opening today. This caused huge excitement among few. No one is working. Some are roaming around lazily. Some are munching into snacks from the cafe, some are staring at the road through the window.
The office seems so alien without the familiar people around. It feels lonely without their smiles. I had a relisation, which seemed true and perfect today, under this scenario. It's not the buildings which make up your office, it's not the amenities that create the workplace -- it's the people around. Human resources are the most expensive investment for an organisation. And the most valuable ones too. An organisation must always nurture them and create a safe, conducive environment for them. Without the people, any organisation is a big, big zero.
This Saturday proved my deep bourne realisation to be true. A different day...a different experience...a new learning!
