This film is NOTHING compared to the original Star Trek series featuring William Shatner as Capt. James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy(also featuring in this film) as Mr. Spock. That series was a legend and a pleasure to watch, despite the SFX being severely outdated by our standards.
This film is like another Armageddon, full of smart-ass dialogues, stupid wisecracks, and scenes and dialogues designed to arouse emotions and forcefully remind the viewers that this is THE Star Trek. Quite a lot of scenes were poorly thought out and badly executed, giving the feeling of being rushed through the motions. Specially the sequence of Spock taking over as captain, Kirk being thrown off the ship and landing on the ice planet, finding old Mr. Spock and a new(and irritating) Scotty, getting back on the ship and finally displacing Spock as captain. And what's with Uhura kissing Spock every time the two share screen space? I was almost laughing.
The movie itself is a prequel to the original Star Trek series. It explains the origins and backgrounds of the main characters, namely Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock, Lt. Uhura, Scotty, McCoy, Sulu, etc. It does a fair job of that, except that Scotty's entry didn't make sense to me at all(cinematic liberty gone too far).
I went to this film with a lot of expectations after seeing the reviews(and of course to watch it ANYWAY since it's a Star Trek film), but I was drop dead bored in the first half to be honest. The second half was much better and at least kept the viewer engrossed.
The main problem is that all the major characters are too young for their roles(specially Kirk, although the guy playing Spock did a good job). They just don't create the impact that the original actors did in their roles. The Director has obviously chosen them with the intention of creating(several?) sequels to this. And of course, like many recent Hollywood blockbusters, this film has a pretty poor script. Looks like we are moving towards Hollywood standards, and they are moving towards ours.
Overall, quite an amateur effort, sadly:-(.
However, all that said and done, I would still recommend you to go watch the movie, considering it's Star Trek and since this movie explains the origins behind the characters.
