If you are in for the horror genre then you should see this movie........The Exorcism of Emily Rose.....well,it's based on the true story of a girl who who was believed to be possessed and the demonic forces lead her to a tragic and violent death.
If you think I have disclosed the plot to you don't be offended, the movie is watchable for its sequences not for the plot. The treatment of the subject is apt and convincing, the reality of the incident is given full justice.
I like the way the movie begins....when the lady lawyer(played by Laura Linney)meets Father Moore(Tom Wilkinson)in the dark, depressing prison cells....it is a perfect start for the sombre nature of the story. The Father is under trial for the death of a girl in his parish named Emily Rose. The lawyer is fascinated by the controversy of the whole issue and wishes to cash on it by supporting the Father.Morover she has a promotion in the cards if she does her job well.
The story unfolds through the eyes of many characters when they peep into the past......as we hear and see accounts of these characters we experience the horror and suffering underwent by a girl and the fact that it's a true account adds intensity to our feelings.
For a lover of realistic cinema this movie proves haunting for its content of suffering experienced by Emily Rose and the people who love her.
The horror aspect is admirably treated without going overboard. It can thrill you immensely,at the same time, it can make you feel deeply.
The best aspect of this movie is its direction by Scott Derrickson.
We wouldn't frown at him for the absolute lack of action in the end because that is the only way this story can be treated and he knows it.
The movie ends by giving answers to all the questions you raise.
Emily was possessed with a purpose.....it was a way of sharing the suffering of Christ and showing humanity the path to Heaven...... that's the message.
I found it more gripping and clearer than earlier movies on this line like The Exorcist or for that matter Stigmata.Well Stigmata is nowhere in comparison to these two movies because of its unbelievably distorted theme.
The performances of the cast are simply natural and superb. The change that overcomes the career minded lawyer and the court room scenes are worth mentioning.
On the whole, a good treat visually and intellectually.Go ahead, Watch it!
