Jodha Akbar passed muster because of Hrithik Roshan. The previous mentioned movies had good scripts and powerful protagonists.
Ashutosh Gowariker nowadays is a grumpy face at awards functions who is likely to insult hilarious anchors and make us viewers feel guilty for enjoying well put together award do’s.
Every community has some gripe or the other against film-makers off and on. Gujarathis where are you? Is the portrayal of this community in Whats Your Raashee justified? Are all bridegrooms on sale in your community? Is this what you want the entire nation to see and wonder???
Granted it’s a Gujarathi play turned into a movie, but the auction of brides and bridegrooms shown in Raashee in this bride-burning country of ours is not forgivable. Enough said about the ethics, now let’s come to the movie itself. Painfully slow, wannabe humour which falls flat, no script to speak of, below average monotonous music, temperamental direction, zilch editing: but brilliant acting.
A wonderful concept all gone wrong.
A few of the scenes are directed with the Lagaan brilliance, else the movie meanders along with no logic or continuity.
If Raashee is all about the Zodiac signs, many of the signs are not distinguishable. Libra and her calculative ness, is well characterized (though the calculative side of Libra is debatable), Scorpio and passion, spot on, Cancer and emotion, recognizable, duality of Gemini , yes. Taurus is downright idiotic picturisation. The rest all muddled and jumbled so much that you lose interest.
Come to think of it, astrologers also should have a bone to pick with Mr. Gowariker for making astrology seem so insipid. Priyanka is exceptional but is strapped by the lack of direction. Hurman is a surprise package. He actually keeps the movie together, underplaying this would-have-been-unlikable-Yogesh character so well, that we end up relating to him. He can still turn out to be a winner. Leave award functions alone Mr. Gowariker and hone up your directional abilities.
