Sarkar- A movie with a story (read The Godfather- Mario Puzo) told over and over again , but told in a way that is refreshing as well as breathtaking...

The Plot

Subhash Nagarik alias Sarkar (AB sr)- is a powerful figure in Mumbai (bears a glaring resemblance to Bal Thackeray). What he does for earning his bread and paying all the gunmen and goons he keeps in and around his own house, no one will ever know. He has a wide network in the underworld, but neither does he do anything that is bad for the public, nor does he let anyone in his circle do the same. Anybody who comes to him for help (read badla-lena), Sarkar helps to restore the muskaan in his face, by doing what he wants...

Sarkar also has a family man's face, caring for his wife, bahu and grandson, and even to the wife and daughter of a long dead acquaintance of his.

Enter Shankar from US, younger son of Sarkar- AB Jr. Soft, sweet and mushy, with girlfriend Katrina Kaif (No songs here, thank god). Katrina believes Sarkar is bad, Shankar reiterates with a'I-know-my-dad,he-is-a-nice-man'.

Enter Vishnu (Kay Kay), sarkar's elder son, vain, hot blooded and a film producer in love with an actress, in spite of being married and having a kid.

Enter Rashid, the weapons(?) smuggler, who wants Sarkar's blessings to deal in weapons. Sarkar refuses, as it's against his policies.Vishnu shoots his movie hero who goes around with the Heroine and Sarkar throws him out of his house. Meanwhile, Rashid through brainwash and brute force, lines up Sarkar's friends against him and traps him in a murder case. What will a helpless Shankar do, when all odds are stacked against him, and time is running out for his dad, lying in lock up, and people trying to finish him there? Watch the movie....

The cast

AB Sr- sizzles in the first half, and just sits and lets tears flow in the second...

AB Jr- Nothing to do in the first half, and sends the audience applauding and cheering in the second half. The second half belongs only to him... He has handled the climax like a seasoned actor... Hats of to little Abhishek!!!

Kay Kay- The Best actor of the movie... The angry young man's role (Equivalant to Sonny in The Godfather) is safe in his hands...

Supporting cast:Don't know most of the chaps' names

(Rasheed) - . Plays the villain in a refreshing way, sans the long talk and guffaws, only glares. His piercing stare is just as good as anything else in the movie....

(Swamiji)- Does justice to his role (

Selvar mani)- Has some witty dialogues, the only source of comedy

(Vishram Bhagat)- Ok sorts...

Tanisha (Shankar's fiance)- Wasted

Katrina (Shankar's girlfriend)- Wasted

Rukhsar (Mrs Vishnu)- Wasted (but for her looks as a housewife- she is ADORABLE)

Supriya Pathak (Mrs Sarkar)- Subtle, submissive and caring. Neat role

The music

Background score is good, but gets a bit bugging at times, when it goes overboard. ' Govinda Trance' is awesome, and so is the music at several crucial junctures.

Script

Some worthy dialogues here and there, predictable elsewhere... Some instances

1)Selvar mani - '' I am from south, operations full north''

2) Swami - ''Subhash Nagarik ek admi hain, lekin Sarkar ek soch hain. ''

3) C.M- ''Jail jake bhi mein do din mein bahar aa sakta hoon''

Shankar- ''Main bhi wohi chahata hoon''

4) Rashid- ''Faisala chunav se hona chahiye, dabav se nahin''

Summing up,each one on screen does justice to their roles. But Ram Gopal Verma fails in bringing the amount of class that his movies are supposed to ooze. Go with very high expectations, you will be disappointed. First half is dragging and boring, where RGV tries to set the plot. But majority of the second half is racy and you wouldnt know the time flying. The camera is awesome, and once again the subtleties of life are well represented.
