The Disney movies; Brave and Frozen finally delivered stories that empower girls without the male characters swooping in to save them or falling in love to live happily ever after. Maleficent makes a significant contribution to continue this theme. Finally, these stories dive deeper into the meaning of love and relationships as much as they are dipped in fantasy. I am delighted to take my teenage niece to see these movies, which foster good conversations about who they are and want to be. As someone of the same age as Jolie, I left this movie with a better understanding of my role as their fairy- godmother. There's still much more work to be done to empower girls, and I hope Disney continues to do so, even if its for the sake of money.
