I visited mahabaleshwar a month ago I got bored there. It's a big hilly area , nice to see all that but that's not entertaining thing. My texi driver took me for two local sightseeng 1st panchgani and 2nd pratapgadh fort , panchgani is fine place but please don't go to pratapgadh fort it's waste of time, there are only marathi people's and they not speaking hindi they only speak marathi and you can only see monkey there or nothing. It's not looking like fort its very bad experience there. But I satisfied staying in hotel name is silver inn , in that hotel there is no a/c but all other facilities are provided and they have good staff and food is good. Thinking about safety? Then it's a safe place but boring place.
