We had one of most enriching experiences at Panhala which is about 20 Kms from Kolhapur in Maharashtra. It is a simple drive to the top of a small hill where the Panhala Fort rests. It has a lot of historical significance from the times of Shivaji Maharaj. We are glad that we chose the option of hiring a local guide in the form of a school boy brimming with enthusiasm, historical knowledge and of course, the zeal to earn an extra buck.

The view of the valley from the fort is beautiful and amazingly different at diffrent times of the day. There are different scenic points to capture the breathtaking sunrise and sunset views. We first picked up a sunrise point a few minutes before dawn and waited quietly in the serene morning for the sun to come up. My 8 year old daughter relishes that beautiful moment of peace and natural beauty. After breakfast, around 9AM while we were enjoying the views, we were engulfed with clouds all around us. Within moments, we could not even figure out that there was a valley below. After a few minutes the clouds cleared out and everything was crystal clear. That was an experience worth remembering.

It is a good idea to drive around to the various spots and learn their historical significance. Of course, stay at one of the private hotels who will serve you well. They have good arrangements and fairly palatable food, although nothing fancy. You can choose to eat authentic Kolhapur style food or typically Maharastrian homely food.
