The Place - Khyber, Kala Ghoda in Fort, Mumbai.
Occasion - My future in-laws(then) anniversary.
The verdict - Well, that cant be summed up in a line. So I will try to do justice to it.
Lets start with the Ambience. Im not really that fond of modern art. Nor did I know at the time who was the person behind the artwork at Khyber. But I cant usually appreciate a good thing when I see it. At Khyber however, the impression I got was of utter confusion. The decorator didnt seem to know what look he/she was striving for. On one hand are the broken walls, the ruined look, on the other hand, marble steps and floor and crystal chandelier. Mebbe that was the look aimed for I dont know, it just didnt sit well with the theme of the restaurant.
That brings me to the next item on my list - the theme of the restaurant. If I would have to go strictly on the basis of the menu, it seemed to be an average Moghlai restaurant, with an average menu, having the average list of dishes. Considering the fact that all items are over-priced, mebbe Ms. Godrej would do well to visit it once herslef to check it out.
The Service? Better not speak about it. Although we had booked a table in advance, it was almost 10 minutes before someone could take us to our table. And it just went downhill from there. The waiters didnt seem to care what you wanted, and when you wanted. I could see a couple of them giggling in a corner. As almost everyone on our floor seemed to be of foreign origins, atleast the least the servers could have done was be attentive.
The food was just average. We had ordered drinks but the presentation was below average. Daal Makhni was good but that is all I can say about it. We wanted to order the Khyber Raan, a speciality, but were informed that it wouldnt be available that day. When asked why, no reason was forthcoming.
My opinion - when you are going to shell out such big bucks(dinner and drinks for two - around 2 grand) over a celebratory dinner, skip Khyber . You might be lucky and get a good waiter and the food actually may taste wonderful, but what are the chances of that?
