Ghulami was released way back in 1985, to me it's one of the most underrated films, I think the movie did average business. The film has a huge stars cast, dharmendra, mithun, kalbhushan kharbanda, reena roy, samita patil, naserruddin shah, anita raj, om shivpuri. Ghulami is directed by one of my favorite directors, j.p dutta , who brought us well made movies that really made sense no hollywood copied movies, movies like yateem, hathyar(oldone),batwara, kshatriya, border, refugee are some well made movies. Ghulami was his first directed film and probably his best movie.

The Film is about a young boy named Ranjit ( dharmendra) when he was young he was in the same leage as bhagat singh, who wanted freedom in the country here ranjit wants freedom in his village against the cruel landowners, who been ripping off the poor farmers. The zamindaar of the village was (om shivpuri) for him everyone are lower standard class people, except the people that are rich as him.

This is one of these eye opener movies that shows the fround of reality in india. It shows the caste system and differenes between poor and rich. The average household isn't allowed to marry their kids like the rich landlords. Most of the peasants in the rural region are poor and inorder to fulfill their requirements they need to lend money from the money lender. These money lenders take their farm land as a guarantee and after some time they capture their land.

Dharmendra as ranjit in the film a low caste person represents the feeling of the young generation, who ansector land has been taken away from the rich zamindaars. He is a teacher who becomes a bandit for causes of the mass, along with him are his best friend jabbar (mithun) and hawaldaar (Kalbhushan kharbanda) who's son was killed by the rich landlords. Then there is honest police inspector sultan singh played by (naseruddin shah) who is in search of ranjit singh, but doesn't know that ranjit is fighting for a good cause.

The film's story is similar to movies like legend of bhagat singh, where ajay devgan is fighting for his country throwing bombs at the british people, this film is set in the 1930's because there was one dialogue in the film by dharmendra in the beginning when he says haan mujhe bhi pakar lo jaise tumne bhagat singh ko pakra hai.

The film marked the debut of j.p dutta one of the greatest directors in bollywood, who has always introduced interesting subjects, all of his work is original and never been copied and he is able to get best performances from his starcast. The dialoges in the film by o.p dutta are brilliant, The music was gulzar is also another highlight of the film, all the songs come at the right time and match the movie. The screenplay is as detailed as you can get, the film is not to be missed by anyone.

The films has outstading performances, at top goes, Dharmendra who plays choudhary ranjit singh, Although this movie was set in the late 80's this time dharmendra didn't have his regular kutte kamine roles, he gives one of his best performances, one scene to watch is the begining when he grows up and returns to his village and goes to om shivpuri's house. His dialogue delivery is pefect he is fantastic in j.p dutta films, hathyar, batwara and kshtaryia are some other movies of j.p. dutta where dharmendra gives good performances. The second best comes from mithun, who plays jabbar and gives one of his best performances, the scene with him and anita raj are great and his dialogues koi shak was good inthe whole. Kalbhushan kharbanda is a another underrated performances who is always in j.p dutta films gives his best performance in this film, especially in the scene where his son is killed. Reena roy , anita raj and samita patil are great as usual. Naseruddin shah gives a good performance as a police officer.

Over all a great movie to watch always

Best dialogue from the movie

Tumne chaudhary ranjit singh par haath uthaya hai thakir aacha nahin kiya yeh galti us waqt mat karna jaab ranjit ke dono haath khuley ho.
