With Benny and Babloo, Yusuf Sajawal who has many hits to his credits with likes of Haseena Maan jayegi , Jodi no.1 and Golmaal returns as a writer helms the director’s cap.
With presence of powerhouse performers like Kay Kay Menon and Rajpal Yadav and the concept of having a satire where members of upper strata of society look down at the lower strata of scociety for certain activities and try to set rules for them and indulge in the same activities themselves makes up for a great subject.***Plot***Benny(Kay Kay Menon) and Babloo (Rajpal Yadav) are shown as room partners in Mumbai where they work as waiters in a small Mumbai irani hotel but when the restaurant gets closed down, both end up in jobs where they have to deal and work with people from 2 different strata of society.
Benny gets a job as a bell boy in an elite 5 star hotel-Mirage while Babloo gets a job of waiter in a small cheap ladies bar- Ghungroo ladies bar. Benny does not like the idea of Babloo working in an indecent ladies bar and considers his job as superior thus ends up many a times ridiculing Babloo’s work. While working in a 5 star hotel, Benny discovers that all that glitters is not gold and all the elites and bureaucrats that appear decent and polished in public appearances have an evil face with them being equally involved in drugs, crimes and prostitution behind the doors.
Benny, in order to maintain the supremacy of his job never tells all this to Babloo even though he has realized that a 5 Star hotel is as indecent as a ladies bar internally. Babloo on the other hand starts liking his work and the girls working in the ladies bar as he gets to know them personally.
In order to save his job, Benny uses Babloo and his girls from ladies bar for a private party and due to an unfortunate event end up in clutches of law along with Babloo and the bar girls. During the case , Benny reveals the truth about behind the door activities of posh hotels to court and Babloo .What price does Benny have to pay to uncover the behind the door activities and Whether Benny , Babloo and bar girls are set free by the law?
Forms the climax.
**Performance*** Kay Kay Menon plays a south Indian pure hearted innocent guy with very limited knowledge of English language with perfection.
Rajpal Yadav as an uneducated Samaritan from Bihar is natural with his performance. Rukhsar, Natassha pitches good performances as girls from ladies bar. Hiten Paintel appears natural. Riya sen doesnt have much to do but she does a decent job with a half-baked role. Aasif Sheikh and Shweta Tiwari performs well.Rest of the cast has done an Okay job.
**Technical*** Though the concept is pretty good, the script end up as being lame. With the movie showing the Bar girls in all good light having a heart of gold and showing most of the people from high class society in bad light , it appears to be pleading the case of bar girls who have lost work with Ladies bar being banned in Mumbai.
The movie and the dialogues appear preachy and when one needs to resort to preachy dialogues in order to get the underlying social message across the audience, it is a clear indication of poor narration and storytelling ability. The music is below average and lyrics poor.
As a director and script writer, the efforts of Yusuf Sajawal are below the mark. Cinematography is just about Ok.
**Overall*** Overall its a good concept gone wrong with some decent performances as the saviour. Although it evokes smiles once or twice but fails as a satire to bring out the message.
The movie appears a poor (in terms of script and narration) cousin of movies like Chandni bar and Page-3 and can be seen only once on a lazy afternoon.https://whatisay.in/media/movies/benny-and-babloo-review/
