Many wonders happen in the field of medical science. New challenges are being faced from day to day. Among such, a rare case of Choledochal cyst is also one. Incidentally a 49 year old female Mrs. H R UmaMaheshwari from Mysore was diagnosed with a rare condition called Choledochal cyst. Dr. Rakesh Rai who is a liver and pancreatic surgeon and a liver transplant surgeon in Apollo Hospital, Bengaluru, with all his experience has done the surgery successfully which was done for more than 4 hours and the patient was fully recovered and discharged within 7 days.
Dr. Rakesh Rai with all his experience says that Choledochal cyst is a rare condition and in western country its frequency ranges from 1 case per 100, 000 to 150, 000 population. It is more common in Japan and china. In India exact incidence is not known but it is rare. It is a congenital condition. It is more common in females and usually it is detected in childhood due to pain or Jaundice. In very rare cases it does not cause any symptom and it is not detected till later in life. Because of this disease patient may get jaundice, fever and abdominal pain but even in patients where it does not cause any symptom it is better to remove this cyst as there is risk of developing cancer in this cyst and the reported incidence of cancer is up to 28%.
Dr. Rai opined that **“The treatment of Choledochal cyst is complex and as it is a rare condition not many surgeons have experience in treating such cases. These cases should be referred to specialist surgeons for management”*
We express our gratitude to Dr. Rakesh Rai for having done the complicated surgery with all success.
