Overview

There is no accessory as classy as a watch. Watches today tell more than just the time, they also make a neat accessory. Whether it is your first timepiece or adding a new model to your extensive collection there are factors that you should consider before buying a wristwatch

Watch Style

Style and utility are two things to consider while buying a watch. If you need a watch for daily use or need one while doing physical activity go for a sports watch. A sports watch is perfect if your style is more casual than formal.

If you need a watch to wear to work or one for formal occasions opt for a classy leather or metal strap watch. These watches are simple, understated yet classy.

Watch Case & Weight

Watches come in different shapes, sizes and styles. Selecting the shape of a watch is subjective to your personal taste, whether you prefer round, square, rectangular or Tonneau-shaped styles. However, the size and weight are factors to consider.

If an oversized watch in stainless steel or ceramic watch is too heavy to handle, you may want to consider a more lightweight style in titanium or opt for a more diminutive sized model.

Case Material

The material of the watch is also an important factor to consider as most timepieces feature metal cases crafted in stainless steel. Many feature black or gold plated finishes on stainless steel as well. Some high-end watchmakers, such as Bvlgari, Rolex, Omega, and Cartier feature premium cases crafted in 18K gold or platinum.

If you’re allergic to gold or stainless steel, you may want to look for a titanium or ceramic watch case, both have hypoallergenic qualities. Titanium is unbelievably lightweight and more sturdy than stainless steel and ceramic is practically scratch-resistant.

Watch Dial

Choosing a watch dial is based on your preference of the background colour, whether you prefer Numeral, Arabic or baton hour markers, as well as the importance of incandescent hands and markers. Other factors to consider include high-tech digital pieces or classic analogue designs, day, date and month indicators; moon-phase indicators and time elapsed chronograph countdown functions, or minimalist styles along the lines of Movado timepieces, which features two hands and a signature cabochon dot indicator at the 12 o’clock hour.

Watch Band

Selecting a band of a watch is really a matter of taste, whether you prefer strap styles or bracelets. Stainless steel bracelet watches are one of the most popular. They also come in black ion-plated, two-tone, gold and rose gold finishes.

Several high-end luxury brands including TAG Heuer, Breitling, Cartier, and Omega offer bracelets crafted solely in 18K gold, along with many more pieces in stainless steel with 18K gold accents.

Leather and exotic skin strap watches accentuate a timeless look and are classy on the wrist. Leather strap watches are water resistant. Rubber and silicone straps are not only resistant to water but are also in vogue.

Watch Movement

This criterion is again based on your preference towards automatic, mechanical or quartz style. Both, automatic and mechanical watches require winding. Mechanical watches must be wound by hand almost on a daily basis. Automatic watches wind themselves with the motion of the wrist and may require a watch winder when not in use for a long time. Quartz watches are powered by batteries, which must be replaced every 12 to 36 months. Automatic and mechanical styles, both, are considered the most prestigious timepieces to own, while quartz watches are within your means.

A good watch will go a long way. It will enhance your personality and help you keep up with the ever-changing times!
