Government-aided Universities

There are universities across India that gets financial aid or funds from the government for maintaining their education system. These funds help the institutes with various purposes like infrastructural development and academic activities. The main advantage of aided universities is that the fees structure is inexpensive.

  1. Banaras Hindu University, Banaras

Banaras Hindu University or Kashi Hindu Vishwavidyalaya was established by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1916, it is one of the largest universities in Asia, with more 200,00 students. The university campus spreads over 1300 acres of land that was donated by then Kashi Naresh, the hereditary ruler of Banaras. BHU is segregated in 6 institutes, 14 streams, and more than 132 departments. Several of its institutes like engineering (IIT-BHU), management (FMS-BHU), arts, linguistic, journalism and mass media, agriculture, law, performing arts, medicine (IMS-BHU) and Institute of Environmental and Sustainable Development (IESD-BHU) are amongst the best in India. Total number of students that enrol every year is more than 30,000 and includes students from over 34 countries. It has over 75 well-functioned dormitories for resident students.

  1. Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi

Jawaharlal Nehru University was established in 1969 by the act of parliament. It is a public central university in New Delhi, and ranks third amongst the top universities in India. It has been awarded the highest grade of 3.9 out of 4 by National assessment and Accreditation Council, bestowed to any educational institutions in the country. It is known for its leading faculties and emphasizes more on liberal arts and applied sciences. It is also known as Centre for Historical Studies, formed in 1970 under the direction of eminent historians, which runs a prestigious programme of post-graduate. This group shifted the focus from politico-administrative to socio-economic history, while the whole country was still contemplating this approach.

  1. Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh

Aligarh Muslim University is a public university which runs on the motto ‘Taught man what he knew not’. This university was founded by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan as Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in 1872, later it came to its present name. The main campus spreads over 467.6 acres, offering both traditional and modern education through 300 courses that have been affiliated for learning. This university is known for providing one of the best education in the field of fine arts, law, medicine engineering, and mathematics. These subjects have very well been recognised and ranked in top 10 in India Today listings.

Autonomous Universities

Autonomous or unaided universities are the ones who work without the external funding of government, make their own examination pattern and syllabus. The fee structure, compared to aided universities, is fairly high, as it being the only source for maintenance and up gradation of infrastructure, equipment, laboratory instalment and up to the pace of the education system.

  1. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay

IIT is a public engineering and research institute located in Powai, Mumbai, India. It was founded in 1958 and ranks as India’s top university. It has expanded over the years with 584 buildings over the vast area more than 550 acres. Currently, it has 14 academic departments, 6 centres, one school and 3 interdisciplinary programmes. The institute offers comprehensive graduate programs offering doctoral degrees in science, technology, mathematics and engineering. The most labyrinth view of Sanjay Gandhi National Park makes the campus even more enticing. The green cover and it is mostly untouched by the pollution of the rest of the city. The annual Science and Technology festival of IIT, Techfest, and annual cultural festival Mood Indigo are the most sort events that are attended and competed over by many colleges and universities.

  1. National Institute of Technology, Raipur

NIT, Raipur was established in 1956, at first, it was Government Engineering College. It was the 19th NIT to be formed and with the years it has been accorded as Deemed University. The institute has  committed to the tedious task of development of technical education by preparing seasoned graduates in the field of applied sciences, technology, and engineering. This institute is located in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, stretches across the vast land for about 100 acres. The campus consists of 14 departments which offer courses in sciences and engineering. The facilities provided by the institute includes workshop, library, hostels, sports centre, health care and placements.

  1. Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management, Hyderabad

This institute is also popularly known as GITAM and was established by a group of intellects and industrialists of Andhra Pradesh, headed by DR. M. V. V. S. Murthi, a philanthropist and a former member of Parliament. The university offers 4-year undergraduate courses of engineering regarding civil, mechanical, electronics, computers and aeronautical. Two-year post graduate courses include MBA, MCA, and M. tech whereas there are six-years integrated courses that included electronics and mechanical engineering. This university also offers 13 programs through distance mode.

Distance Education Universities

Distance learning or Distance education are for students who want to study but cannot attend the lectures in the university. The courses offered are either hybrid or blended. These type of courses can be learned via online tutorials or through the learning material provided by the certain university.

  1. Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

IGNOU is a distance learning open university that was established in 1985, when the Parliament of India passed Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985. This a largest university with more than 4 million students and the sole reason to have been founded this open learning system was to impart education by means of distant learning for those who are particularly disadvantaged segments of society, coordinate, encourage and set the standard. Other than teaching and research, training and extension have also become the main area of its academic activities. It also acts as a national resource centre, which serves to maintain and promote the standards of distance education in India.

  1. Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU)

YCMOU was established in July 1989, named after Maharashtra’s great political leader and builder of modern Maharashtra, Yashwantrao Chavan. The jurisdiction of the open university was originally for the state of Maharashtra, but later on, it was extended and now can operate anywhere across the globe. Due to the statutory power given by 1989 act of Maharashtra State, and also been recognised by University Grants Commission of India, the university can award academic certifications like diplomas, certificates. Graduates, post-graduates and doctoral degrees. The university has launched EduSat-based learning, with the consent of ISRO, this has helped university experts deliver their lectures to registered students with two-way audio and visual communication facilities. The university has also come up with videos-on-demand where there is streaming video format on the web. To reach in rural and distant places, the university has taken up Mobile learning vans ideology.

  1. Sikkim Manipal University

Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995, is a co-educational public-private funded university. It was founded in accordance with the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act, 1995. The motto was for imparting exemplary education opportunities and medical services in the State of Sikkim and country wide.
