We have seen a lot of reviews on the bad effects of smoking and associated health problems.  Before thinking of quitting smoking, you need to first understand Smoking is just a Cigarette with fire on one end and a sucker on the other.


I have smoked for 10 years and have quit last October.  So, I am qualified to be considered as a person who understand smoking psychology.


Well, Let us see the point at a stage where you have decided to quit but cannot do so.  Let us see the reasons preventing you to quit:


1.  **The damned urge*


The urge comes primarily due to one of the following.


The taste requests it


The best way to take on this factor is spoil the taste.  Stop telling yourself that with the taste spoiled the need for cigarette has vanished.  Mints do the trick for most of us.  Some people find Other mouth freshners Coffee to subsidise it.


You are bored


Start concentrating on doing something.


a. Concentrating on work


b. Biking


c. Spend more time at home(I assume most parents dont encourage smoking at home)


d. Spend more time with your girl friends(If they encourage smoking, try to find cooler girl friends)


e. Take up reading


f. Go for long walks


You tend to give in to yourself


Now this is the battle you should be determined to win against yourself.  Muster up the qualities required.


Others may not think you are Kewl


Hope you are matured for that.


Identify stimulants


You have to identify the stimulants which will urge you to smoke.  I found Tea and Coffee were stimulating my urge for cigarettes and you may avoid them or spoil the taste with mints


2.  **Exercise Regularly*


This gives you twin benefits.  It gives a feeling that you are strong physically and hence breeds the mental toughness required to stop smoking.


The inability to perform some strenuous exercise due to lowered lung capacity will drive you to stop smoking.


3.  **Maintain accounts*


See how much you spend on cigarettes and the amount of money you save on quitting manifests as more money almost instantly.  If you realize the value of money - Probably the best motivator.


4.  **Observe Phases*


While many may not agree, I have found that, the more determined resolution of no smoking makes me take up smoking the next week.  Count your cigarettes and phase it out.  That is lasting.  That even reduces the urge.  The period when you start reducing and the day when you have absolutely stopped should ideally be 2 to 3 months.  This figure will vary for people.


5.  **What to do when drinking*


If you like me enjoy liquor, you will find it hard not to smoke while drinking.  This is best dealt with Avoid drinking during the period when you are reducing the smokes.


6.  **Have the pride that you have quit*


There is no substitute for this.  Driven by pride ensures sustainability and enhances your confidence and boosts your personality.  You become more assertive after that.  Saying Cigarettes allows you to be creative is bullshit.  You may feel that your concentration on the job reduces in the cigarette reduction period but have the belief that it is temporary.


7.  **Proximity to smoke*


Never be with Smokers during the period when you are reducing the smokes.  That will go smooth on your schedule for quitting cigarettes.  Once you have quit, No matter what, you will NOT smoke again.
