I have been a happy owner of an Alto for the past year. I would recommend it to anyone who does a lot of city driving and wants a trouble-free car
The best thing about an Alto is that it RULES on city roads. In thick Mumbai morning traffic, youcan effortlessly manoeuvre and squeeze yourself into that impossibly small space between two vehicles to reach the head of the queue at the traffic light - if that sort of thing is to your taste.
Only rickshaws and hardened taxi drivers can squeeze in, where a determined Alto goes. None of the big cars will work their way around jam packed traffic the way an Alto can. You can pull your car into the smallest parking space and do a u-turn on the road without fuss. As a woman driver who has also driven a Maruti 800 I can testify that the Alto is an extremely woman-friendly car.
The magic power steering makes a helluva lot of difference and is truly worth the premium over the Lx. Mileage is also sweet (I get 14-15 kmpl in Mumbai with AC). While it is small for seating, the fold-down backseat creates a lot of room if you want to transport anything. When shifitng house, I was able to pack in 10-12 cartons including my PC, TV etc.
The only time when you feel the pinch is when you go out of the city, climb ghats, or carry a full passenger load. The car slows down - painfully sometimes. But its a small price to pay for a car that otherwise gives me so much joy.
