I have read a few Frederick Forsyth Novels. I loved ''The Day of the Jackal'', ''The Miracle'' and ''The Odessa File''.
THE VETERAN is his latest Novel that he wrote this year, (2001). I usually buy his books but this time I borrowed the book from the Library.
This is not the usual Forsyth type book as it is made up of five short stories or novelettes. I do not like short stories and that is why I did not buy it.
This book is quite small as it only has 228 pages. I was no surprised that the book was well written but I was quite surprised to find that each of them held my attention.
Before you begin to read my review you should know that I only give an overview and never give you the ending. I feel this ruins the Book for the People who might want to read it. If this bothers you then please do not read my review of this Book.
1) The first story THE VETERAN. This is a story about a Man who is brutally killed by two Men. T
There is one witness who calls the Police and identifies the killers. The Police are convinced that they have the case solved.
The killers hire a very smart Lawyer who ribs the case to shreds. They are acquitted and set free. What happened to justice?
There is more to come and the end is a surprise.
2) The second story is called the ART OF THE MATTER. This story is about Auctioneers of fine Art.
An unusual crime is committed by one of the top person who runs an Art Gallery.
He is so sly that he makes someone else seem like they committed the crime. There is not one scam but three in this Story. The last two are not committed by the man from the Art Gallery.
They are committed by a very honest man getting back at the person who set him up to be a scapegoat. How does it end? Well I won't tell!
3) The third story is called the MIRACLE. This story is very scary. This time I will tell you that on the last page you find out that an American Tourist gives a large amount of money to the Church to keep the memory of a local Saint alive. Why? I'll never tell. What I will tell you that when you find out it will stun you. If I told you anything more it would ruin the fun you would have if you read it.
4) The forth story is called THE CITIZEN. It is about a Man who works in the Customs area of Heathrow Airport in London, England. He receives some information that a lot of drugs are coming in on a flight from Bangkok.
The story is about how they catch the thieves.....but there are many twists and turns before they do. Nothing is straight forward in a Forsyth Novel.
5) The fifth story is called the WHISPERING WIND. This is a very unusual story that starts during the time the Native Americans ruled their lands. The Native Americans in this story are the Indians of the Plains. The story spans from 1852-1977.
The main character is Ben Craig who is serving in General Clusters Army. His job is to act as the look out.
One day he saves an Indian Girl who has gotten herself into trouble. Naturally he is punished for doing it.
A while later he is capture by one of the Indian Bands. He is only saved because of his good deed that he did by helping the Indian Girl.
The girl is called WHISPERING WIND. They fall in love. Her Tribe is not happy about this and the steal away one night hoping to elope.
There is the normal chase scene. All I will tell you is that what happens next is quite unusual!
Before I read the book I did not think I would be recommending it to you. Once again Fredrick Forsyth has written a book that is worth reading. I do recommend it to you.
