Mark of a man

A necktie is indeed a not-detachable part of formal clothing. A suit is incomplete without a necktie.

There is always a small increment in respect for a man who wears a necktie as compared to a casual dresser.

Ties are costly and they can come in a range of Rs. 50 - Rs. 50000/-. So for such an expensive piece of clothing, certain care needs to be taken.

So here are my tips(tried and tested) for the proper care of neckties:

At the time of purchase

Ensure that the tie is heavy and does not seem to fly in winds. A heavy tie is easier to maintain as compared to a light tie. This is because of the clothing inside the tie which, in Hindi, is called as Bakram. The cheaper the cloth, the thinner it will be and more easily it will break its stiffness.

After Purchase

  1. After the use of a tie is over, open up the knot in the tie.

  2. Do not fold the tie, rather roll the tie around your index finger till you get a cylindrical shape out of your tie. The tie will regain its shape within 5-6 hours.

  3. If possible, make Windsor and Half-Windsor knot alternatively. This will ensure that the inside stiff clothing of your tie does not break loose.

  4. Never ever wash a tie. Ties are only to be dry cleaned. Washing a tie will cause the inside stuffing to shrink resulting in a poor shape of the tie.

  5. If you have all kind of ties(Silk, Cotton, Polyester, Linen, Micro Fibre), do not keep these ties at one place. Always keep ties of same kind of cloth together. Some cloths are more attractive to the moths. Thus by this way, you can avoid the other type of ties.

  6. Do not try a full windsor in a linen tie. Linen is a kind of cloth in which knots are a bit different to open. So a full windsor will be tricky.

These are my suggestions which I have coined with the continuous usage of ties.

One more thing I would like to write, though not a suggestion, Silk ties are the best part of one's attire. Handle them carefully and you will feel like a man when you wear them.
