I went to thenmala ecotourist center couple of years back. it is the first ecotourism destination in India. Centres in thenamala along with palaruvi waterfall situated about 20 km would be an amazing idea for a one day trip especially those travelling with family.

The thenmala ecotourism consist of three entities. An adventure zone, leisure zone and butterfly exploration zone. There are separate tickets for each and I believe packages are separately available for each. refer site for the same.

We first visited the adventure zone, it starts with an elevated walkway, we were greeted by a group of friendly monkeys, the walkway leads to the adventure zone itself, which doesn't quite live up to its expectation added to that it not that well maintained. Even then there are options for rowing, rope gliding, monkey crawl etc. We dint stay back much as we had also added palaruvi to our itinerary. Also we avoided  the butterfly park on advice of a local who informed that the time we went(may) was not suitable for that.

Palaruvi is about 20km from thenmala is easily accessible by road, we can drive very close to the falls and from there its a small trek, palaruvi in itself is quiet nice picnic spot and one can easily enjoy a half day there. The waterfall os not large but is scenic and one can bath in it, also there is a separate spot for women to bath.

After lunch we returned back to thenmala, where we did boating in the thenmala dam. if haven't done boating before it is advisable, else could be a bit boring.

Then we went to the highlight of the trip the leisure zone. It is really well maintained and the trek through it is quiet enjoyable. There are various sculptures that add to the natural beauty of the place. it is situated close to the spillway of the dam and a bridge across it provides for a good photo op.

To reach thenmala by air nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram(80kms), By rail  nearest station is, Kollam(66kms) and by road, Two hour journey from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. Regular buses are available from Kollam, Kottarakkara and Punalur.

When coming through punalur the Punalur suspension bridge is also a nice attraction. Built in 1877 it is the only suspended-deck type in south India.
