The review is about Animal Kingdom(2010) not the crap Animal, what to do MS is not including best cinemas of 2010 in its list. Animal Kingdom is very realistic still simple without glorifying any violence or crime. That's the beauty of Animal Kingdom.

As far I know its first flick of Director David Michod who also wrote the script If this is true than I am damn sure David is a director to watch out. The story revolves around a silent young guy Josh (James Frecheville) whose extensive family, cousins, grandma etc are all criminals. David has used this character to such a extent that it will haunt you for few days.

It discovers a mixture of crime related issues, from the outcome of growing up in a world where criminal movements are daily routine, to the intensification of crime that is a natural result of a people who tries to prevent crime unofficially in this scenario i.e. Police aka josh mom Julia Cody tries her best to protect her seventeen year old son, from her criminal relatives who they have not seen in years.

After Julia dies in front of J's eyes from a heroin overdose, J, feels he has no choice but to contact his maternal grandmother, Janine Cody(Jacki Weaver), the family ruled by wicked old lady, for a place to live. Jannie rules the family with a edgy crimpy love over her three sons, the gently scary Andrew Cody aka POPE (Ben Mendelsohn), the restless Craig Cody(Sullivan Stapleton), & the just about of age Darren Cody(Luke Ford). Pope & his best friend, Barry Baz Brown(Joel Edgerton), are armed robbers, with Darren their upcoming trainee, while Craig is a mid level drug dealer. Melbourne's Armed Robbery Squad is after Pope, who is hiding out.

But when the standoff between the Cody’s & the Robbery Squad is taken up a indentation, an all out war follows, with some victims in between innocent J caught in the middle. The only basis, trust love in J's life is his girlfriend, Nicky Henry(Laura Wheelwright). With those casualties comes an investigation by Homicide Detective Sergeant Nathan Leckie(Guy Pearce), who knows that Cody’s are involved in this homicide. As Leckie tries to get J on his side, J has to figure out how best to get himself out from the middle, whom to trust or being unbiased. J also wants to figure out how to correct what he thinks justice in an all around bad situation.

Thats the basic plot.

The scenes are natural simple no exaggerated dramatics, no jumping overhead cameras while big things chases, gunfights, police interrogations, murder develop in writer/director David  tight , terrific crime story, it's take part in out on a distinctly human dimension. Animal Kingdom is a slant, enduring crime thriller about one kid's evolution from victim to killer. Unaffected but pensive, Josh isn't uncultivated about reuniting with the criminal wing of his family, but he's not one to be disloyal. His Uncle Pope true psychopath may explodes at any time.

Not the entire Cody men agree on everything, still they're not all bare inside, but the ones that aren't don't seem live long. It is, after all, the animal kingdom. David does a very well job showing out those bonds & presenting why Josh must break them if survival is on last resort. He has created a slow pace narration that mingles heist picture elements with basic new age instants.  It demands liking for  Jay, to worry over what his violent family will mean not just to him, but to the one person he’s let himself care about his girl friend. The base of grandma Jannie love for the kids which later becomes hate is the real drama of Animal Kingdom. Cinematography by Adam Arkapaw & editing by Luke Dolan are both excellent.

As name suggests its totally a raw realistic flick, nothing over everything is perfect for the situational plot. If David had gone overboard than I don’t think the impact of Animal kingdom would have been the same, so for me he has done extra ordinary job as director. After all the plot, direction, & technical things apart best is performance. Jackie Weaver, is a standout act, like a dreamy grandma from a nightmare, with her tiny figure, broad smile wrinkled eyes, Jackie's jolly psychopath is the most frightening feature of the whole flick, the kind of woman who might give a hug then from nowhere can stab you.

Her overpowering charisma has tended to reduce the contact of the other performances, though all praise also goes to Mendelsohn, playing the most restless of the Codys with hulking nuisance, playing up his character's lack of intellectual quickness with some great dialogues. The other notable act is by Guy pierce who delivers some punch hard hitting one liner. Other actors also performed gorgeously, no one can say that hey this guy could have done better that means all gave their best.

Animal kingom is sharp simple crime thriller with family values. Watch it for some excellent performances & the way Director narrated it. It got the energy of powerful silent animal.
