First and foremost,to see this movie you need lots of guts because it is extremely gory and violent. But,it is not glorified violence. It deserves its rightful place in the movie. The flick starts with the d-day invasion of Normandy beach and the sequence is absolutely rivetting. It reminds you that war spares no one and almost every bullet has a name on it.The way the Allied soldiers are butchered mercilessly by the Germans is quite revolting.Definitely, this movie is not for the squeamish. It si the story of a bunch of American soldiers who have been given the assignment of tracing out a missing soldier whose name is Ryan. Now here is the catch. This guy is the last of a family of 4 brothers of which 3 are already dead sacrificing their lives for the glory of America. It comes to the attention of the American Authorities who feel very guilty for the whole thing and now want to make it up to the family.Hence the orders. These soldiers have to rescue Private Ryan and see to it that he does not even get a scratch on himself. How they do it and the price they pay for it forms the crux of the movie.See it by all means and prepare to think about it for another 2 hours because it compels you to.The war veterans in America when shown this movie in a trial show wept like babies because the recreation of the war scenes were so realistic that these people were thrust right into the nightmare once again. The acting by everyone is superb just because it is directed by the guru himself of the war movies MR.STEVEN SPIELBERG.Please see it just to have an idea of what soldiers are about and the sacrifices they give for their country.
