Road(2002)

Producer:Ram Gopal Varma

Director: Rajat Mukherjee

Music: Sandesh Shandaliya

Cast: Vivek Oberoi, Antraa Maali, Manoj Bajpai etc.

Introduction:

Well to say no-one would have expected what Road turned out to be. It seemed yet another RMG?s different types but it was, well, quite different. Probably it might be the reason why the movie didn?t get going at the Box-office. But well it was a good attempt by both Rajat Mukherjee of PTKK fame alongwith RMG and I quite liked and my friends too liked it. It?s a movie of only about 2 hours or just a more little than that.

The Story/Plot:

Films starts of with only legs of a ?male? being shown (in clothes?ofcourse) probably waiting for sum1. Then the female legs come(once again in clothes..) and Thank God now we are shown the face of the couple who is no one other than Arvind(Vivek Oberoi) and Lakshmi(Antra Maali). Both are lovers and their marriage is opposed by Lakshmi?s dad who is Commissioner of Police in Delhi.

After a song the couple decides (with an idea of ofcourse our hero)..chalo bhaag chaale. And our modern day heroine instead of thinking like a typical hindi film heroine..(Nahi samaj kya sochega..papa ki izzat ka kya hoga..types ) says yes bhaag kar shaadi kar lenge. And then we have another song which is not at all required. So here we go now for a Road Trip in a Tata Safari owned by Arvind along with Lakhsmi. Both of them are shown to be moving on Rajasthan?s ?Road? where they are into something very weird.

They are driving their way happily when suddenly they see an abandoned car. Both the hero and heroine take a close look at the car and then think that it might have broke down so the driver had left it. Then as they move further we have the introduction of Babu (Manoj Bajpai) who, at first seems a nice person. But he starts off his bad things by asking to shut down the ac and open the windows coz he wants to smoke. The couple tries to manage this and then Babu really starts harassing them asking them to stay at the Dhaba for some snacks. After sum time Babu starts speaking bad words about Lakshmi.

It is at this time Arvind tells Babu to get off the car. But Babu, instead of getting off Arvind?s car pin points gun to Arvind and lets him off. Why? Becoz Babu likes Arvind?s gf Lakshmi. Now the real movie begins with Arvind catching Babu for the first time with a help of taking lift in a truck. Babu vanishes as we are shown but after sumtime Babu comes back in the same truck that Arvind took the lift owned by Sunny Singh. Babu bashes the Safari from behind breaking the back portion and near about kills the couple unlit they have a narrow escape.

Once again when the couple is about to move after a night stay in the hotel, Babu had come in their car and this time he makes sure Arvind doesn?t get in the car again. By this time the Police had already found a dead body in the car which is of Babu and Arvind is accused of this. Babu narrates his dukhi dastaan of how he became a Don trying to gain sympathy from our femme fatale Laksmi. At this time Laksmi seeing no way to escape and thinking that Arvind will come to save her plays a game with Babu saying that she also loves her.

All this happens in a house in which they had come for a night stay. With the help pf localities (Raj Zutshi)and the truck driver Sunny singh and the police Arvind finds the whereabouts of Babu. In the morning Police take-over with Sayaji Shinde coming to catch Babu but he gets killed and once again Babu and Lakshmi escape. Now we are taken to Ghana with a motorcycle chase in which on one bike is Arvind and on other we have Babu and Lakshmi. Babu tries to kill Arvind but Lakshmi somehow manages to save him.

Atlast the chase gets over and we have Arvind hitttin Babu hard. The climax is really good when Babu tells Lakshmi to tell Arvind that she loves Babu she turns around and kisses Arvind depicting that she had played a game with Babu. Babu is left on the abandoned ground to die and our couple lives happily ever after.(although that is not shown).

Performances:

Vivek Oberoi: Does a nice job. Considering this was only his second film after his debut in Company he has done a nice job. Looks cool in the beard and acts well too. Just dances badly in the songs.

Antra Maali:Well Antra is shown trying to be like Urmila (looks hot though). Her hair style, dialogue delivery etc all suggest she tried to copy Urmila in the movie. She is there just to add glamour to the film. Does well speaking some of the dialogues. The interaction between Babu and Lakshmi is good to watch. Has played her part well.

Manoj Bajpai: Is the heart of the movie. His expressions, dialogue delivery everything is gr8 to watch. He has really overshadowed Vivek in the movie. Looks cool in French beard and has dressed also cool. Natural acting by him really made this movie worth the money spent(one time).

Sayaji Shinde:Is in a small role of Police inspector. Does well in the small part that he has played in the movie. Must watch scene of his is when Arvind leaves him on a deserted road and takes his jeep away and he talks to himself while walking back.

Other guest appearances by Rajpal Yadav, the truck driver (I forgot his name), Vijay Raaz have also done ok. Not too good not too bad.

Music:Music by Sandesh Shandaliya is strictly ok. I didn?t find a single song humable in the movie except Makhmali ye Badan. Frankly speaking songs were not at all required in the movie. I don?t know why RMG added the songs. The Road-theme is ok too.

Conclusion: As I had said earlier this is a different kind of movie so if u have not seen it its fine watchin once. Sometimes the story seems superficial rest of the times its fine. If u r tired of watching the same old love stories and the similar dishum dishum types then this one can be watched for a change.

As usual comments, criticisms, RRC eagerly awaited..
