The funniest movie I saw this year is called RARE BIRD. It was produced by Lions Gate Films and Sturla Gunnarsson was the Directer. The film was shot on the rugged coastline of Newfoundland, Canada.

THE STARS: William Hurt plays Dave Purcell a gourmet chief who owns a Restaurant. Andy Jones plays Phonse, Dave's neighbor who is a scavenger and an inventor. Molly Parker plays Phonse young sister-in-law.

MY REVIEW: Dave Purcell is married but separated from his wife who works in Washington, D.C. They had opened a restaurant called THE AUK. Dave is a gourmet chief and expected people to drive half and hour to dine on his exotic food. His wife receives a wonderful job offer and wants Dave to close the restaurant and come to Washington with her. He refuses and although they are still married it is on the brink of being ended. The restaurant is like 'the ill-fated bird’ that it was named after. Every day Dave gets up and prepares lunch. The only person to eat it with him is his neighbor Ponce. They dine on gourmet food and drink rare wines. One night Phonce asks David over to see his new invention. This is when he meets Molly who is visiting Phonce during a summer vacation, (between High School and University). To reach the garage from the house Phone had made a cave passage. In a cave one would expect there to be on light but when they entered the cave I thought there was a hallway of big bay windows. Dave asks how this was done. Phone will only tell him he was working on a project with a German inventor. They were partners and the man was called away to meet with some people in Los Angeles. The man was murdered and he never came back. Phonce had the plans and had hidden them. He was on the look out for strangers wearing long coats and wearing fedora hats as he was sure they would be arriving soon to steal the plans. The garage was bigger than the house. Before Phonce would show Dave is new invention he thought they should have a glass of wine because there was a favor he needed to as Dave to do for him. Dave asked what the favor was and Phonce brought out a large box. In the box was a load of white powder. Phonce said he had never had 'coke' but suspected Dave had used it. Dave agreed he had 'once in a while'. Phonce asked Dave to tell him if the Powder was 'coke' or something else. Dave rubs the powder on his gums and told Phonce he must have millions of dollars worth of 'coke' in the box. He asked him where he had found it. Phone told Dave he had been our scavenging a few days ago and it floated ashore. The favor he wanted Dave to do was to find a dealer to sell it to. If Dave did this he would get part of the money. Dave agreed because by now he was 'snorting coke' up his nose. After that Phonce showed Dave his new invention. It was a two person private submarine.

The next day Phonse suggests a plan to save the restaurant. They'll report a sighting of an extremely rare extinct duck that was floating on the sea near the Auk Restaurant. They would do this by each of them phoning a talk show. The talk show was base in the United States and had a famous bird-watcher as there guest. The plan was to phone from different pay phones and describe a duck that they had never seen before. Dave phones first and didn't get his sighting quite right and the expert didn't believe him. Phone phoned a few seconds later and his report of the sighting got attention of the bird-watcher who said he would be arriving in Newfoundland within the week. Dave didn't believe this would work but as soon as he returned to the restaurant the first bird-watcher was there. She told him she would be back in a few hours and please reserve a table for her. By noon the restaurant was full. He doesn't have any staff or supplies. Phonse says he'll get the supplies and Dave should go find his old sous- chief and a dishwasher Phonse said he would pick up the supplies and Molly to serve the food. By the time they came back the 'hills were alive with hundreds of bird-watchers'. Bird-watchers from around the World began to arrive the very next day. Things become complicated when Dave falls for Molly Parker. Then his wife phones and says she is coming home to help him sell the restaurant as she needs her half of the money. Every day Phonce asks Dave if he has found a buyer for the 'coke' and Dave assures him he is trying. Phonce decides he must do something to help Dave before the famous bird-watcher arrives. He carves out a replica of the rare bird and ties it to the submarine. He takes out the submarine, submerges it and goes back and forth in front of the restaurant. The bird-watchers flock down to the rocks to get a better look and take some pictures. The wife, the men in the black coasts and fedora hats and the famous bird watcher all arrive within hours of each other.

SOME THOUGHTS: I won't tell you how it ends because I never tell the end of movie in case someone hasn't seen it yet. For personal reasons I never go to films that show people using drugs. If I knew this would happen in the RARE BIRD I wouldn't have gone. That would have been a shame as it was the funniest movie I've seen this year. ©LL
