Why I Read This I read this mainly bcos I have to get married one of these days. So I thought it will be good to know abt what I will be getting into ;-) usually I am required to attend a 3 day preparatory course on marriage without which I wont be allowed to marry. Before that I wanted to accumulate some theoretical knowledge so I read a couple of related books. This happened to be one of them. I look at books like reference for a ‘test’ called marriage ;-)
What kind Of book This is a comprehensive and practical guide for a happy married life. If only one can put into practice the good things listed in it. In a way it’s a self help book. The book covers marriage from all aspects like spiritual, personal, medical & psychological, social. Hence this is so far the different among all books on the topic.
The book is published by St Pauls, 265pgs, 50Rs, 5x7 inches
Who shud read this All adults married or planning marriage will benefit from this. Another category of ppl who profit from are priests, counselors, social workers who may have to meet couples in their work profile. It is good if both the girl n boy who are getting married can read this. That wud bring both to some common ground.
Rushes: I say the book is a comprehensive guide bcos it covers all aspects for a dummy. Nowadays information is available everywhere but mostly myths are flying around. This book covers all aspects of a marriage well enough to displace any myths.
The book is neatly divided into 6 parts covering social, biological, sexual, medical, legal & spiritual aspects of a marriage. Each part also has a FAQ section which helps u to cross check ur comprehension and helps in self rating.
The author does well in the first part to drive home the importance of family in the society. He says with changing society we need a new approach to marriage. The books helps one to develop such a new approach. This part has also guidelines abt how to choose a mate, how the courtship shud be etc. The next part on conjugal harmony is a classic on communication & dialogue in marriage. This also has lessons on the importance of mutual adjustment & responsible parenthood. The author makes a detailed effort in listing the things in marriage which requires taking ones spouse into trust.
The biological, sexual & medical parts of the book are very much ‘scientifically graphic’. For the aam aadmi who may not have had any knowledge of the opposite gender the section is more than a biology book. The section explains with diagrams the reproductive system of both men & women, the section on pregnancy n delivery will put many myths to rest and many fears will be removed. The section on sex stresses importance of sex in marriage as the fullest expression of love in a marriage. It also covers the sex emotions of both the genders & addressed common sexual difficulties in marriage. The medical part covers in detail abt various STDs, premarital examination, sterility & family planning methods.
The spiritual aspect covers marriage from a Godly view. For those planning a court marriage with a ‘bhagake le jaao’ approach the legal section has all details as to how a marriage in recognized among hindu, muslim, Christians. The section has references to various marriage acts of each religion with all permutation n combinations possible.
Overall every aspect of marriage gets covered in the book. One doesn’t have to read the book from cover to cover. The helpful word index at last will guide you to the very page where info abt certain thing is available. Even the contents index in the start is structured in detail to help naviation.
Author & Works The book is authored by Dr Anthony Grugni M.D. I am not sure if he is a priest. He has also written a book called ‘Sex Education’ which is suitable for any a teenager or married couples or counselors or parents. The book helps one to be clear of many sex myths that are in the air today.
I says I wud recommend this book to anyone abt to get married or ppl alredy married and want to live it to its fullness. At 50Rs this is a book generations can use n reuse. Like Irfan khan says in the hutch ad ‘Kabootar mehenga pad jaayega’ I wud say of this book ‘ek pizza mehenga pad jaayega’ compared to wealth of info this book has ;-)
