Haan huny, I know you believe that beauty has nothing to do with the face, but could I miss the excitment in ur voice when I told u that a channel was showing the live telecast of Miss India on TV??

The Miss India Contest is amongst the first beauty pageants started in India. Since then it has been a constant topic of debate, on TV Talk Shows, College Debates, etc. It has been highly criticized for the kind of skin show that is presented boldly on the stage. The ''Swim Suit Round''... well critics have crossed all bounds to write about this one. From the Shiv Sena to NGO's and Fashion Designers, have all spoken out their ideas about the show, every year, year by year. But alas, nothing seems to have affected the popularity and success of the show. It no doubt becomes the most hyped about event of the year. From the biggest movie stars to the greatest politicians, all are seen as a part of the event. Year by year it has become a bigger and bigger affair.

The show has attained success to the extent that today the greatest brands of India, associate themselves with the show is called the ... Ponds Femina Miss India Contest. Now the title itself suggests the amounts of money that is involved.

With the expence of all the money, 25 beauties of the country are brought onto the ramp with vigourous training sessions of 45 days. These girls belong to the different states of India, different cultures and beliefs. But in these 45 days, they are made to live under the same roof and ''groomed'' to be presented as the icons who would represent India to the world. And yes they work wonders with these girls. Some of the finest products of the contest are Zeenat Aman (Miss India '78), Juhi Chawla(Femina Miss India'84), Aishwarya Rai(Miss World'95), Sushmita Sen(Miss Universe'95), Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, etc etc. Infact the present day social activist and actor Nafisa Ali is also a former Miss India.

Despite all these facts, at the core of it all I feel that these shows are adding to the Neo Colonization of the Indian minds. Such events, add to the rush for ''fair Brides'' and ''slim Figures''.... though I did not so strongly believe in this idea some time back, but this time's contest affirmed my belief

The show began as usual with the introduction of these 25 girls, and believe me you...i could hardly make out the difference of one girl from the other...they all looked soooo much the same....same smile, same figure, same hight, and similar clothes!!!I bet, u could actually measure the smiles of these girls and decide for urself...they were ALL THE SAME!!!! Still I thought that I wud be able to make out the difference when they come to the question and answer round... but what a blunder!!! The Judge's question round was a total sterio type..the same questions...what would be the 3 wishes u wud want from God?....Who do u want to be reborn as?...What will u do once u win the crown?....blah blah blah.... and pathetis answers!!!! the answers were much more steriotyped than the questions!!!! I was wondering if the judges also were feeling cranky asking such brainless questions!!!

And the ''crowning glory'' came with the question for the final round... Is the society influenced by bollywood or is bollywood influenced by the socity?...Look at the standard of questions that people in our country can prepare!!! Amen...hello...what happened to all the ''social service'' and all that, that the former miss india's promised(though they never came true)???Atleast they sounded sane...this was like HORRIBLE!!!!

All the time I wondered what anyone from a foriegn country watching it must be thinking??? Do Miss USA organisers ask questions related to Hollywood to their contestants?? And that too in the FINAL FINAL ROUND???

actually I dont deny the fact that the Film Industry is an integral part of the nation, and these modles all get their penny finally from them...but plzz.. if the organisers claim that they present the intellegence and knowladge of women, and all that...WHERE IS IT???

What made things worst was the answers that the girls delievered...

And what made it intolerable was the winner...even if u havnt seen the show..look at the pictures in the papers and see for urself that the ugliest is the winner...and her answer (she admitted in an interview later)was so average!!!

Thus all I have got to say is...Huny, keep watching such shows...because my faith in the fact that u highlighted became stronger... Beauty has nothing to do with the face

waiting for ur comments....

PS- Kareena Kapoor's performance was the lousiest thing I EVER saw!!!
