I've used this machine for a year and happen to read some reviews. Thought my review would help families go for it when they can, and should. If presented with the facts to think about.

When you need an electrical high powered cutting/grinding device that is to be used mostly by women on a daily basis mostly in a wettish environment in your house, you need to expect to find a company that thinks like you and dares to make products that prioritizes first things first. The mixer/grinder/ mincer/ chopper/ slicer is most probably the ONLY high powered mechanical sharp electrical tool' that a house would possess.

Every other brand offers an open ended high powered 'super sharp' power tool for kitchen grinding purposes which India has used for a long time. If you're a husband, think about it: Your wife is grinding chutney and has to check for 'consistency' before proceeding again. What does she do? Before opening the jar, does she switch off the plug?(You may answer for yourself). In an 'industrial environment' would it be 'permissible' according to safety norms 'not' to do that?

When a 'live' blade is 'exposed' (like jar open) though knob is on 'off', and your lady is stirring inside., a 'smart' system should 'cut off' power without 'consulting' the user. Don't you agree!

ONLY PHILIPS HL1659 has this in the 'name of its intelligent arm'. Though it gives the impression that it is mainly for 'holding' the lid shut, the brilliance of this Philips design is to feedback into the system that the 'lid is shut'. This arm 'activates' at various heights for various jars, to' close the circuit' ONLY when the lids are shut and the arm tightly held down.

That means: Every time you 'open' a jar you have assuredly 'cut off power' to the system. THIS FEATURE IS NOT AN ADDED FEATURE OF THIS DEVICE; IT IS THE BRILLIANCE OF ENGINEERING THAT SHOULD TOP ALL YOUR PRIORITIES IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT FOR YOUR HOME!

Now think of HL1659 as a product built 'around' this safety feature that adds up the food proc, timer switch other projected features, etc. This product is a 'must' choice for families considering bringing home a power tool that is 'most safe' from the engineering perspective.

When you read reviews written by people who have written how they 'miss' the 'convenience' of their old 'mixie', in getting a grinding job done in a 'hurry', the onus of 'responsibility' is shouldered by the human watchfulness rather than 'solved' by engineering design by a smart manufacturer.

Yes! this is not an 'affordable' feature for everyone AND not everyone 'NEEDS' to only have the most engineered product- but when 'lured' by choices that offer you a 'better carrot juice making efficiency', and more attachments, keep in mind that your home is a 'domestic' environment with unrestricted movement of all age groups and so getting a dedicated home-purpose juicer' is the wisest option for that purpose.

PHILIPS SHOULD HAVE BEEN SUPER SILENT ABOUT ITS SOUND: I have no idea why Philips has made a mess of its own self by the 'super silent' mention that has costed them badly by way of almost every user getting a 'jolt' of sound upon first use, NOT BECAUSE IT IS LOUDER THAN OTHER MACHINES but has literally shattered the 'super silent expectation' to bewildered disappointment. C'mon Philips don't talk about sound. No one asked you how silent! We know this is a power tool.

750W power is in my opinion(like a powerful car) NOT a requirement to get a job done 'quickly' but rather(like the car needing all its power when needed during a crucial overtake) is worth having all that power for that specific moment. Better 'have' than' have not'! You are more valuable than a machine (or the car that has not)!

Yes! Food processor should have included French fry attachment. (They've provided two graters and one 'variable depth slicer', apart from the regular mincer and kneader). By the way, you'd love the meat mincing with all that power!

DESIGN FOOTPRINT: This might be vital for some potential buyers. The design of the base unit has very LITTLE footprint on your platform. BUT! YOU ARE GOING TO RECEIVE THIS MACHINE IN A BOX THE SIZE OF A 36 inch CRT color television set box(if you remember regular CRT televisions- not the flat screen). All the jars, the 'separate' gear attachment for the food processor unit and the food processor jar and juicer attachment and blades NEED QUITE A LOT OF SPARE SHELF AREA IN YOUR KITCHEN! This is something you need to put up to have the 'intelligent arm' feature that warrants a 'vertical design' unlike other brand food processor designs which have the FP jar sitting beside the grinder jar always(Platform footprint Vs shelf space). Don't just make room on your kitchen platform, clear up shelf space too in your kitchen before your HL1659 arrives.

THE MOST ANNOYING PART OF PHILIPS: You make a great product with metal, plastic, rubber. THEN YOU WANT TO SAVE ON PAPER! to be called the most' Eco-friendly'! Well, I the end user needs a nice large user manual 'DESCRIBING' each part in detail, it's manner of usage, how to attach detach and MOST IMPORTANTLY assemble and dissemble the blades for washing etc.(The variable slicer attachment has a blade that has to be dissembles for washing and THERE IS NO VISUAL DESCRIPTION WHATSOEVER of how to put it back into its 'variable adjustable mechanism'). Phillips! Atleast PUT THEM UP FOR DOWNLOAD!(See attached pics to see manual) not the worst, but sure can be more informative!

So, when you're buying MAKE SURE the demo guy completely takes off this slicer blade and teaches you how to put it back. If you aren't confident, then wash the whole thing without removing the blade out! Watch out! This blade is sharper than you expect a high speed food processor blade to be.

Build quality is impressive. I've managed to keep the lavender jar looking new after a year of use. Keep water spills away, keep it clean from food spills to avoid insects nesting inside(this one has more sensors and electronics than other FPs). That should avoid 'loose contact issues' etc that a few have mentioned in their lamenting reviews(especially after a couple of years of use).

If you are the kind that 'looks to have' the best in that area that goes a long way of enriching your family, think no further, go for this machine. Ask your wife(or husband) to forget the 'ease of use' of that 'other old B M K I S brand mixie/FP' that has NO intelligence programmed in, and very soon, you'd be 'smiling with ease' knowing that an engineering company that has put in good effort in an attempt to give the best possible home power tool solution deserves to be in your home.

I know this review will help families make an informed decision about this essential power tool for the home.
