A dry friday for new releases I took the opportunity to watch an old movie, Pardes and this review is my sharing of views on the film.

I think Pardes is a mixture of Ram Tera Ganga Mailiand Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. The soul of Ram Tera Ganga Maili was a call to keep Ganga pure. Don't spoil the pure Ganga for your corporate greeds. In RTGM, Ganga falls in love with the city boy and bears a child from him. To find the lover, Ganga comes to the city and the city mistreats her. In Pardes, Ganga, (yes, the character name) is been taken to America and they mistreat her. One quality of Ganga water is that it is medical and it has healing capacity. Probably from its origin from sulpher filled mountains the water has a capacity to kill gems and thinnest known river water. All the rivers joins Ganga will take the name of Ganga. So, what if the Ganga is been taken to western waters? Will it purify or she loses her purity and identity?

To this plot, the idea of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge is been merged. In DDLJ, the hero comes to the girl's house and wins love of the family and in turn the GF. In Pardes, the hero takes a little unconventional step of preparing the bride and cover all the bad side of the groom as well. If love happens in DDLJ in natural circumstances, in Pardes it is happening in little unconventional circumstances.

So, what if Subhash Ghai is successful in merging these two plotlines and creates a new story and we can call it as Pardes? Will it stop the director's fascination of the subject? I think no. If you watch 'Taal', you will realise this. In Taal, the same characters gets another lifeline. Amrish Puri and Alok Nath remain as fathers of the boy and girl. Aiswarya Rai replaces Mahima Chaudari, Akshay Khanna replace Shahrukh Khan, the Apoorva Agnihotri's character gets a positive relief when it comes to Anil Kapoor. Then, the soul of the story remains the same. A talented 'pure' girl been taken to the city and she is been exposed to 'city' treatment and had to struggle to get into the real love. And yes, Ganga change her name to Manasi.

The story and screen play is good but not exceptional. A lot of cinematic liberty is been taken but the feel of romance is been maintained. Patriotism has been used as the cashing element though it tries to justify everything in the name of it.

Songs like 'Yeh Duniya, Ek Dulhan...I love my India...', Dil, Yeh Dil, Deewana.....', 'Nahi Hona Tha...', 'Kisi Rose Tumse Mulakat Hogi...Meri Mehbooba' are evergreen and forms the best part of the movie.

Shahrukh Khan is super cool in the movie. He just carries the role from Dilwale. Some 14 years back, he is so young and energetic. Let it be the Kabadi match or the fighting scenes or romance, the youth in him is visible. This was Mahima Chaudhari's debut movie and arguably the best by her as well. She is impressive as an overactive girl. Extra expressions only add glory to the innocence of the character and Mahima did an exdcellent job. Apoorva Agnihotri didn't impress much. Ever dependable Amrish Puri and wonderful actor Alok Nath did their roles quite well, though Alok Nath's character was weak. All of the lady gang and childrens did their roles well as well. The comedy villains were not affective though.

Cinematography is superb. The camera captured natural beauty and emotions in equal brilliance.

Choreography is cool and costumes adequate.

The movie definitely has its share of drawbacks, but the pluses overshadow them to make it as an excellent movie at the end. We miss the Subhash Ghai magic and wish for him come up with more romantic films for the young in India for Pardes is a successful movie from him which I would love to watch again.

My rating: 4.5 stars
