Paheli- review after reading other's review

After reading reviews at mouthshut, I decided to watch ''Paheli''.The other reason was of the star cast SRK,Rani mukherjee,Big B,Juhi Chawla etc.

The promos depicted the movie as epic, and a film by Amol Palekhar.Obviously the message seemed to be its an art film.I guess thats why the film did not do well with the masses. A SRK flick with Rani Mukherjee requires candy floss like KKHH to attract the youth. Paheli is attracting the art film communities who are not fond of commerical movies. No idea how makers of the films can take such a wrong decision where marketing will not be effective.

Ofcourse, one can argue that Lagaan did well both with the critics and also at the Box office. It did not have the candy floss look as in DDLJ,KKHH, or DCH.But Lagaan was marketed aggressively.Paheli is a good film, but I think it was not marketed so well.It depended fully on the star presence and their box office status. No wonder it did not even get a nomination in Oscars.

Its a rajasthani folk tales of a girl who gets married. For her the Suhaag raat is the most special moment of her life, and has been dreaming all her years for this special day.But when she found her husband SRK engrossed with his accounts and works, and also his decision to leave home the next day and not return for 5 years(with a reason that its a rare auspicious time for business), one can sense the dissappointment in her.

In the meantime, a spirit (or ghost) falls in love with her and has been hovering around her as birds, squirrels etc without her knowledge. The spirits sees the opportunity and disguises himself as her husband.

But the spirit was truthful and really loved her.He discloses his identity and gives her a choice whether he leaves or stays behind.

At the height of disapointment when her husband leaves her, and also being given the choice for the first time in her life to decide......she agrees to accept the spirit as her ''husband''.Thus starts the Love story.

Around this time, the intelligence of the audience would tell him that during the climax, the ''real'' husband would be back and this will create a complications of whom the accept. In earlier movies of love stories, one of the hero has to die.In the modern love of the hero has the leave the love triangle and forget.

Nothing of this sort happens in this unusual love story.

Instead the ending makes a mockery of the audience intelligence. The spirit enters the body of the real husband, and so lives happily as husband.........something he should have done on the first time itself.

But I guess the reason he did not fo because, the spirit first wanted her to accept him.

Whatever, the ending has a lot of question mark.Perhaps thats another reason why the audience did not accept the film.

Big B was superb, even in a small role.He played the role of a shepherd who tries to solve the riddle of finding who is the real SRK amongs the two.He conducts ridiculous test that gives hilarious laughter to us.Only he can play a role without any logic, but make it appear logical.

Sunil Shetty and Juhi chawla were extras, and their roles were wasted.Infact their scenes were not required, and should have been deleted to make the movie more shorter.songs could also have been deleted, and are forgettable.

Overall the movie is good, but not the best orf SRK and Rani Mukherjee. It is the strength of the of the rajasthani folk tale that made the movie entertaining.
