Lake Cini in Eastern Pahang,Malaysia is a thoroughly enchanting and mysterious destination shrouded in myths and legends. The beaches of the Malaysian state of Pahang attract a lot of foreign and domestic tourists but an inland spot with a very different environment that is well worth checking out is the mysterious but enchanting Lake Cini. It is only about 56 km from the state capital of Kuantan and is largely unspoilt. This serene lake is the place of legends,of mystery, of long held oral traditions and myths. .There are tales of dragons-or nagas- the reputed sighting of a Loch Ness type monster, and other very strange happenings. According to legend, a walled Khmer city is said to have existed long ago at the lake-site. Archaeological excavations have apparently revealed remains of a civilization.

Aerial photographs too indicate that a city may have existed whilst linguistic experts point to language and cultural similarities between the Khmer of Cambodia and the Jakun Orang Asli tribe who inhabit the shores A Loch-Ness style monster is reputed to be the guardian of Lake Cini and archaeologists and scientists have carried out investigations into the legend. Just like her elusive cousin in Scotland, the naga of Tasik Cini-to give the Malay name- remains an enigma. What certainly does exist at Lake Cini are ferocious crocodiles and they can sometimes be spotted on the far shores of the lake. Actually Lake Cini is a series of a dozen connecting lakes about the RiverPahang. These placid waterways are home to a wide variety of bird species whilst during the period June through September, the lakes teem with a superbly colorful carpet of red and white lotus flowers. These contrast vividly with the verdant green surroundings of the lake. Beyond the lake are a complex of chalets for visitors, a resthouse, a restaurant and camping grounds. Popular activities include angling where catches of 5 kilo monsters are not that unusual and jungle trekking. Adventure lovers can also hire a boat and explore the extremities of the mysterious lake. You can also visit the Orang Asli village and buy well crafted souvenirs and handicrafts. Access to Lake Cini is by way of a spur road off the Kuantan-Segamat Road-it is around 56 km or an hour's journey time from the state capital of Kuantan.

After arriving at Kampung Tasik Cini, you enter the lake by a delightful boat ride in a local boat called a sampan. The sampan glides for several km along a very narrow meandering stretch of river through the Pahang jungle. Tall trees and their canopies provide shade cover and the only sounds to be heard during this tranquil boat ride are those of the outboard motor and the calls of the jungle animals and birds. Isnt it about time you took a trip to Malaysia and included a visit on your itinerary to the mysterious but enchanting Lake Cini? You might just discover the monster yourself
