Title : digital delight

Review : I bought a Nikon Coolpix 3100 for two reasons: it fit I into my budget and contains features available on any standard model for a much lesser price. It is handy and easy to use and the multifunction buttons on the rear are of great use. Despite its easy handling and ergonomics I have found that the zoom is insufficient for distances over 8 feet and beyond that range all pictures have to be edited for clarity, pixellation and sharpness.

Going beyond the set zoom of the camera does not help because the resolution falls drastically. It is always advisable to have ancillary flash card readers when using this camera. The batteries don?t last long. Though the camera comes with two nickel hydride rechargeable batteries they do not last long for the shoots. The auto focus and zoom functions draw a lot of power.

One other thing is between shoots the Ni Hyd cells take longer to charge the flash. It does not accept nickel cadmium rechargeable cells? that makes things difficult because of the common availability of the nicad as against hihyd cells. One has to study the camera and its settings carefully before using it or be ready for a nasty surprise of a dead camera at the right moment. The flash cards are a good idea and I would suggest that one should have a minimum of a 512 mb flash card and the best would be a 1 Gb card if you plan to use it for a vacation.

I found it cumbersome to keep transferring data to my laptop on a regular basis and it also makes easier archiving if you do it at one shot. (You need to have digital image archiving software on your system). But the image quality within the limitations of the device is fantastic?I have shot from a moving car, a motor bike, stationary positions.

The subjects have varied from nature, sunrise, sunset, flowers, people, skyscapes, nightscapes, wall paintings, indoors and outdoors?it does a great job within its limits?but don?t push it too hard. This is not a camera for the connoisseur, but a handy aim and shoot camera for a family or for a vacation which is only for you and your family. It is not a major issue camera. With settings that can compensate for human error it is good even for kids (if you teach them how to handle things carefully). For home use and direct shoot purposes it is a great, buy.

Just one word of advice, if anyone is thinking of a digital camera?look for a higher pixel and greater zoom camera. All the best
