Muqaddar ka Sikander- as seen in 2012.
Jun 12, 2012 05:03 PM 2714 Views

This movie was launched in the 70s when Amitabh was at the top of his game and it was a major hit as such, in its time.

The first time this movie came around I was quite little and didnt get to see it. I saw this movie later on as a teenager and appreciated it.

The movie revolves around its main character " Sikander; who is an orphan and is shown some kindness by a Rich man & his daughter Kaamini. The movie starts off In Simla with the main character Sikander and ( Amitabh ) and Kaamini ( Raakhee) as kids. The youg Kaamini shows compassion and kindness to the orphan Sikander. Due to a misunderstanding the rich lawyer ( Dr Sriram Lagoo ) and his daughter reject him . They then go back to away to Mumbai . and Sikander follows them. In Mumbai he is cared for by a poor woman . Sikander grows up to become a well of businessman with his now adopted sister.

He tries to approach Kaamini now, but she is affected by her prejudice and doesnt reciprocate his feelings. He starts seeing a singer-dancer - Zohra ( Rekha ) which makes her beau - Amjad jealous.Kaamini falls in love with Sikander's best friend -Vinod Khanna and marries him, and Sikander dies trying to protect his loved ones and never gets the love of his life- Kaamini.

The movie plot runs sombre from the beginning. The young kids in Simla - and Amitabh 's dream sequences going back to the same , snow clad mountains. Some parts can be quite melodramatic , for example the scene at the Club where Sikander finds Kaamini dancing with his best friend, and the candles are all out with the spiralling smoke filling the room or when the mother dies on the doorstep of the rich master.

However, all the actors fit in with ease. The dialogues are quite deep & meaningful and we can see Amitbah carrying it with ease. Rakhi does well as the cool aloof Memsahib. Rekha looks beautiful in the few scenes that she is in. We can see her effort in her dress and makeup and careful acting. I remember that the Song " O saathi re " was a major hit and was very popular in its time. So was the song " Rote hue aate hai sab " .

This movie is a cult classic of its time. The main story is quite sad in its own way, as Amitabh's character was potrayed as a winner in all of his films and this movie ends with sikander passing away. However it will make a mark in ones heart. This movie is a perfect showcase of the best Combinations - Amitabh and Kishore Kumar ( songs ) Rekha and Amitabh, Raakhi and Vinod Khanna . A very young Amjad and also dont miss the much talented Sri Ram Lagoo.

Watch this movie if only to just experience the stars of the 70's and oneof the best scene of all times ...namely Amitabh before singing " O Saathi re " on stage . He starts off with a simple few lines and then goes into his life story and gets emotional and sings.

Amitabh carries it all on his shoulders..A must see for Amitabh fans.
