MUMBAI RAINS

I am writing this review regarding the Mumbai Rains and how it affected the Mumbaikars' life.

It was very good day in the morning but in the afternoon a very heavy rain started on 26/7/05. I was in for a project which was fortunately held in an area somewhat near my place.

During that day the entire railway traffic was ripped apart. This caused a heavy problem to the Mumbai residents who depend heavily on the Railway trains.

The first line which was to be closed was near the Badlapur-Kalyan area. The central railway was badly affected due to the rains. The DADAR railway station was practically submerged in water. This station is one of the most important Junctions connecting the Mumbai local Trains.

The rains caused such a disturbance that the railways took atleast 2 days to recover.

The most disturbing thing which took place was the loss of life which occured due to the manholes. Many people lost their lives. But on that day I also saw people who were either standing near the holes to warn the people passing through that area.

The rains but couldnot hamper the motivation and the determination of Mumbai Residents. People stayed in stations all night to reach home. They slept in station for that night and many people who used to reach home after travelling for around 2 hours by train had to reach home walking. This is not a hype. My neighbours reached home the other day by walking. Even I had to walk all the way to reach home because the roads were filled with water and there was a heavy traffic jam near the Thane-Belapur Highway(near my home where I stay). It took me around 2 hours to reach home by walk.

The cars were submerged in water. Many people lost their lives because they refused to leave their cars. They feared that water would enter their cars and so kept their doors closed. But alas before the water drowned the Car's Air conditioners went off.

Those who survived such incidents could not save their cars.

The mobile phone lines which are otherwise considered very helpful was not helpful at all. Infact, my mobile phone went down! Many of them had problems contacting their dear ones.

The Air traffic was also not working satisfactorily. Infact, landing became a problem for some planes.

Some of the residents thought that staying in the office would be a better option and they did stay all that night. Once, everything was normal they started to towards their homes.

But one good thing which was noticed from this rain was the helpful attitude of the mumbai residents. I studied in a newspaper that a schoolbus was caught in the traffic jam and could not move ahead and the children started to cry due to their hunger. A nearby Milk seller offered all the students in the bus a glass of milk.

But due to some landslides many lost their lives.

The heavy rains did cause a lot of problems but Mumbai recovered within a few days.

Regards,

arouse.
