Ineffective COP VS COP Drama!

We have witnessed a spate of cop films in the recent times (Wanted, Dabangg, Singham, Department, Rowdy Rathore etc) but most of them were masala entertainers boasting of larger than life characters who can easily beat up 25 people at a go. In that context, Maximum stands out. Our hero (Sonu Sood) doesn’t go ‘aata maazi satakli’ when his nemesis (the cops actually) create obstacles in his path. Resting on an interesting idea, Maximum very sadly fails to make any impact whatsoever. The script is insipid and so is the direction. Thumbs down!


The story of the movie: Mumbai 2003. The hold of underworld in Mumbai is almost over. Pratap Pandit (Sonu Sood) is an encounter specialist who has sworn to give the underworld a full stop. Another encounter specialist, Arun Inamdar (Naseeruddin Shah) too has a similar agenda. Both have excellent network and the best informers and officers at their disposal. However, both struggle in the battle of one-upmanship. How this affects them and their lives over a period of 5 years and is also taken advantage of by others forms the crux of the story.


As the story suggests, Maximum is not a cop vs gangster drama as was believed by few pre-release. This is a cop vs cop drama. Although the story had enough meat, the script and direction was extremely dull. Nothing much happens for most part of the movie. The director made sure to make the goings-on seem authentic (characters are using black and white Nokia phones) but on the other hand, the film shows the new white-and-purple local trains that were unveiled only in 2007! The manner in which the background scores suddenly plays and that too loudly was irritating. The item number too is damp squib.


However, a few scenes do stand out. Except Naseeruddin Shah’s character, the rest of the principal characters were well sketched. The interaction of the media guy (Amit Sadh) with the cops and also politician (Vinay Pathak) was interesting and quite true. The twist in the climax was truly arresting and the finale shocks. But the film was dry and hence once comes out of the theatre dejected.


Sonu Sood gives one of the best performances of his career and proves that he can easily carry the film on his shoulders. He has the looks and macho attitude and hence aptly suited the character of a tough cop. He will be seen next in Shootout At Wadala in yet another interesting avatar. Waiting! Naseeruddin Shah for the first time didn’t quite impress, except in the drunk scene. So sad! Neha Dhupia (Sonu’s wife) puts her best foot forward and brought life to the otherwise lifeless film! Vinay Pathak delivers a brilliant performance and it’s unlike he has done before. Amit Sadh looks charming and had the advantage of a strong role. The guy who played Sadhu left a mark. Anjana Sukhani was wasted but looked smoking hot. Hazel Keech was okay though. Murli Sharma, Mohan Agashe and others were good in their respective parts.


Music was a complete let-down. Only one song lingers – Aa Ante Amalapuram – which was average composition. Daniel B George’s background score and R A Krishna’s cinematography were quite apt. Kabeer Kaushik and Rakhi Soman’s script fails to make an impact. It’s common knowledge now that rivalry exists among different departments of Mumbai Police. And with the recent raids and criticisms faced by the cops in the city, Maximum could have had a kind of a relatability factor as well. But the good story couldn’t translate into a fine film. It’s indeed unfortunate that someone like Kabeer Kaushik (whose first film Sehar was exceptional) failed to come up with a film which was in true means his cup of tea!


On the whole, Maximum is a disappointing fare, simply put. The story was novel but the execution was the biggest culprit. Thankfully, a few well-shot individualistic scenes and performances save the day!
